Science or Social Studies

Assignments for the Week of March 29-31

I have included 3 different Science Experiments. You have to do 1 of the Science Experiments, BUT you can do 2 or all 3 of them if you want to. Take Pictures and post under Science Experiment on Class Dojo. Have Fun!!!!

Make PEEPS Playdough

You will need: 6 peeps, 6-8 Tablespoons of flour, 1 Tablespoon Crisco

STEP 1. In a microwave-safe bowl, add 6 snowmen peeps, 6 tablespoons flour, and 1 tablespoon of Crisco.

STEP 2. Place in microwave for 30 seconds. Remove and stir together.

STEP 3. Once you cannot stir anymore, take out and start to knead in your hands. If it’s too sticky, then add more flour and keep kneading until it’s no longer sticky. Don’t add too much.

STEP 4. Now time to play and have fun!!

Make PEEPS Slime

Adult supervision is necessary for using the microwave as this slime gets hot! You are heating up marshmallows.

You will need: Peeps (sleeves of 5), Cornstarch, Vegetable Oil, Tablespoon, Bowl and Spoon, Potholder

STEP 1: Break apart the sleeve of 5 peeps and add to a microwave safe bowl.

STEP 2: Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to the bowl of peeps.

STEP 3: Put the bowl of peeps in the microwave for 30 seconds.

STEP 4: Remove the bowl form the microwave {adults should do this please}.

STEP 5: Add a tablespoon of cornstarch at a time and mush it into your softened peeps. The peeps will be warm to on the hot side so adults should do this to start. We didn’t use a spoon.

STEP 6: We added a total of approximately 3 TBL of cornstarch to each color batch. You can feel when it isn’t really sticky anymore, but you want to make sure to really knead each tablespoon in well before you add more. We did find the 2x the pink peeps needed a bit less cornstarch.

STEP 7: Continue to knead and stretch and play with your peeps slime!

At this point, you can continue to make more batches of the peeps slime if you have more colors. My son was most excited to be able to combine the colors at the end,

What you end up with is a stretchy slime dough that has some fun movement to it. It is thicker so it doesn’t quite ooze the same was a traditional slime, but you can still give it a good stretch as well as watch it slowly swirl into a pile.

Make Salt Crystal Easter Eggs

  1. Construction Paper, Water, Salt, Container and Spoon, Tray or Plate, Egg Shape (for tracing), Scissors, Pencil, Hole Puncher and String (optional if you want to hang then when you are finished)

STEP 1: Start by making as many egg shaped cut outs as you would like. Or you can just make one giant egg if you prefer that fills your tray. You will want the shapes to lay as flat as possible, so we used a cookie tray.

At this point, go ahead and punch a hole in the top of the egg cutout if you plan to use your salt crystal eggs as an ornament!

STEP 2: Place your egg cutouts on your tray, and get ready to mix your super saturated solution (see below).

First you need to start with hot water, so this is an adult only step if needed. We microwaved about 2 cups of water for 2 minutes. Though you can see from the above right photo, we did not use all of our solution for our tray.

Now, it’s time to add the salt. We added one tablespoon at a time, stirring very well until completely dissolved. You can feel the point at which it’s not gritty as you stir. {Close to 6 tablespoons for us}

Do this with each tablespoon until you can’t get rid of that gritty feeling. You will see a bit of salt on the bottom of the container. This is your super saturated solution!

BEFORE you pour the solution, move your tray to a quiet location that won’t be disturbed. It’s easier than trying to do it after you have added the liquid. We know!

Go ahead and pour your mixture over the eggs just covering them with a thin layer of the solution.

Our egg cutouts had a bit of a tough time staying separated and we didn’t try to fix it too much. You could experiment with different methods like tape to stick them down first or an object to block their movement.

Now you just need to give your eggs time to form the salt crystals. We set this up mid-morning and started seeing results by late evening and definitely the next day. Plan to allow approximately 3 days for this activity. Once the water has evaporated, they will be ready.

We transfer our salt crystal covered egg cutouts to paper towels and let them dry out for awhile. Plus the crystals really seem to bond nicely as everything dries out more.

When they are nice and dry, add a string if you wish. Examine the salt crystals with a magnifying glass too.
