Phoenix-2-Milkshakes

Saturday November 5th

Taylor Tan ‘06 and Tania Bettis

Join us as we hike from central Marin to the Pacific Ocean! We’ll start our morning at Phoenix Lake and wander our way around reservoirs, cool redwood forests and over Mt. Tamalpais. Along the way we’ll chat and take in the incredible natural beauty Marin has to offer. We’ll eventually pop out of the woods onto a rolling grassy ridge that drops to the ocean. After enjoying the breathtaking views of the coast we’ll descend to the sea where milkshakes and burgers await us at The Parkside snack shack in the early-afternoon. We will also hang out on the beach for a bit!

At the end of the day, we’ll hop in our chariot (read: MA van), which will be parked at Stinson already. We should be back by 5PM at the latest, earlier if we feel like it. You need to be in reasonable shape for this, but you don’t need any hiking experience. There are both steep uphill and downhill sections of this trail so if you have weak knees or ankles, consider your footwear carefully. You will need sturdy hiking shoes and a daypack with layers, a raincoat, a sizeable snack or three, and a couple of liters of water. Join us on our perfect Marin day-adventure.

Backpacking Henry Coe

Thursday-Sunday November 10th-13th

Leslie Beach ‘04 and Kaia Schweig ‘19

About halfway between the coast and the Sierras, you'll find Henry Coe State Park, 87,000 acres of wilderness near San Jose. Ghost pines and oaks, rolling hills and compelling mushrooms characterize this spot. It's also got a unique approach to recreational land management: you can't make backpacking reservations in advance, so it's like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-Book come to life! We will head out from MA at lunch on Thursday, missing G block. We'll spend Thursday night in a car camping spot, consult the group's preferences to pick our route, and get our zone first thing Friday morning. We'll then backpack Friday and Saturday nights, enjoying the terrain and sharing stories. We'll hike out on Sunday and return to MA before dinner.

Sunrise Ceremony on Alcatraz

Thursday November 24th (Thanksgiving morning)

Leslie Beach ‘04 and Edinson Lopez Flores

From 1969-1971, indigenous people from many tribal and cultural backgrounds occupied Alcatraz. In remembrance of that occupation, in questioning of mainstream US practices around "Thanksgiving," and in celebration of the persistence and resilience of Indigenous people and their traditions and relationship with the land, every year people gather on Alcatraz to witness ceremonies, speakers, dances, and other performances as the sun comes up. We will meet at MA at 3:45 am, drive to Pier 33 in San Francisco, and get the ferry to Alcatraz. We'll return by 10 am.
