Linked here is my final presentation to MARC about the work of two projects that I have been engaging in at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences.
I) The Effects of Disruption to Normal Developmental Myelination on Microglial Proliferation
II) The Effects of Statins on Myelination
In a few short days I will be graduating from my time at MA. MARC has, in no small way, been one of the most impactful and important programs I have been a part of here. These past few weeks, I completed a portfolio summary on the completion of my research with Dr. Wendy Xin and my beginning work with Alexandra Beaudry-Richard. With Dr. Xin I was looking at the effects of disruption to normal developmental myelination on microglia and with Alexandra I am investigating the effects of statins and myelination. Throughout May I came into the lab at UCSF to work on this new statins project. While my work is no longer mentored by my time in MARC, the statins project is only its beginning phases and I will be coming into the lab through this summer to continue my work. I may update my blog and site as the statins project progresses and I learn more in the lab, but until then...signing off!
I am in the process of beginning data analysis and write up. I have completed an analysis of my three data sets and comparing my results for the knockout and control mice and the change of the knockout mice over time. I am also looking forward to senior project in a few months and getting into the lab!
The paper that I worked on with Dr. Steve Bryson, Halle and Kylar was published this past week! I proud to have been able to learn from and work alongside these scientists and am very excited about the publication of the research I was a part of. It was an honor to be included in this publication on Rescuing Unrecognized Planet Candidates in Kepler Data in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
Over the summer I completed my project proposal which has set me in a good place to envision my project for this year. I definitely need to do some thinking over the next few weeks about how I want to outline my tasks for this school year, however I feel confident that I will be able to do this. My SMART goal for September is to complete excel analysis for the most recent set of images I analyzed. I will need to meet with Wendy and after completing this analysis will have a better sense of potential next steps for my project given the results we find. I want to keep myself accountable by the end of September for having a general goal for my project for the end of senior year because I have a feeling the year will go by faster than I expect.
This past week I shared the culminations of my work this year through a poster presentation. I am excited to be starting my next set of image analysis this week and to have completed my project proposal! It was really exciting to hear about the paper that the Kepler False Positive Working group is in the process of publishing at our MARC zoom as well. Our MARC cohort this year has developed so many fascinating projects that are exciting to learn about!
I am looking forward to updating this blog over the course of the next year! This past year has been eventful and exciting as I have sought to define a research project. A year ago, when I was admitted to the MARC program, I had been anticipating to learn for a month in a neuroscience lab and to join the False Positive working group team for Nasa database research over the summer. Over the course of this unique school year with coronavirus, my aims and engagements have evolved. Throughout 2020 I engaged in image analysis and literature reviews with the guidance of Dr. Xin. After beginning to delineate a clear project in neuroscience with the guidance of the MARC program at the start of 2021, I also chose to take a step back from the Kepler False positive working group. Since then, I have been working on deepening my understanding neurological processes and experimentation involving transgenic mice. I have also been focused defining my research project on microglia through a research proposal and sharing my work and progress on this website!
