Day 1 is structured around making something. Get ready to be creative and have fun, as most of these sessions are focused on creating, whether through art, music, science, writing, you name it!
Right now, tie dye is super popular! It's a great way to spice up plain clothes and is super fun! We will be focusing on regular tie dyeing using various ways, and will also be bleach dyeing, which is a super fun and easy way to dye dark clothes and make them look super cool! Be prepared to have some good laughs, and make some awesome clothes!!
Your mission is to create a video to welcome the class of 2024 to MA: your group will have one hour to get the details, storyboard, film, and edit your video - it'll be a race against the clock. Bring your creativity, phone/camera, and collaboration (plus maybe some iMovie skills) to make the most entertaining, polished, and welcoming video of the session.
In this session, you will get the opportunity to cook with me over Zoom! The recipes will be easy to follow and delicious, not to mention that you probably have all of the ingredients sitting in your pantry. Join me for a laid-back cooking session that will result is some tasty leftovers.
Do you like to doodle? Join Rachel for an hour of relaxing, creative math art inspired by Annie Perkins' "#mathartchallenge" on Twitter. Together we'll explore and create Hitomezashi stitching, Spirolaterals, probabilistic plants, Apollonian gaskets, cardioids, tons of triangles, and more! I'll bring the math (and some good tunes!) while we draw and have some fun creating patterns together. All you need is some paper (graph paper if you have it), pencil/pens, a straightedge, and the itch to create your own designs.
You are invited to join the fun of pun-tificating and sharing the best dad jokes, puns, one-liners and other forms of short humor that folks can bring to the table. Participants are asked to bring at least 4 or 5 of their favorite jokes to share, and we will vet them (the jokes, not the participants) for inclusion in a document that will be shared with the rest of the MA community. As part of the fun, we will break into smaller groups to attempt to come up with some original jokes of our own. Caveat: Please avoid jokes about germs; we don’t want to spread them around.
Yes, it's a competition! Find out more here.
During shelter-in-place there has been a tremendous rise in videos of music and artistic performances shared on social media. While there are many apps that can streamline the process of capturing performances and processing, editing, and mixing video, MA has already provided all students with the professional tools to have complete creative control over audio and video production: Adobe Audition and Premiere. Learn the basics of entry to these tools of professionals by seeing how a multi-track video of a musical performance is captured, edited, mixed, and processed into a final clip. Examples of such explorations with these tools can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/jj-musicvideo.
Come learn the basics of Adobe InDesign and put your new skills into practice to make a one-pager with photos of your 2019-20 school year. We’ll cover shortcuts, page layout, and setting styles for content and structure. Exercise your graphic design skills and join us to compile a collaborative photo highlight reel to close out the year.
In this session, we'll be exploring how we can turn little parts of the natural world into art. The session is inspired by Andy Goldsworthy, an artist and naturalist (highly recommend just looking him up and checking out some pictures if you're curious), so we'll talk briefly about his philosophy and look at some of his work (plus some pieces by OLE!). The bulk of the session, though, will be about making your own pieces whether that's in your backyard or just using things in your house! Absolutely no experience of any form needed, it'll be all about having fun with the beauty around us.
In this hour, you will be given a number of prompts, images, and quotations that will allow you to relax and let your creative self come out to breathe and write. You may choose to escape the present and draft some fiction, or reflect on the present and explore your inner landscape. If you want to try on stream-of-consciousness, fantasy, science fiction, personal essay, or memoir, you will have the space to do so. Every participant will have the opportunity to share out.
In this workshop, we will be exploring photography from a less formal perspective. We will look into different feel good styles of photography that will really accentuate different aspects of your photos. Whether it’s for Instagram or just for fun, we will explore ways to make the photos you are already taking natural and more compelling.
As those of you have studied the American War in Vietnam know, veterans of that conflict did not experience the jubilant welcome home that awaited those who fought in earlier wars. They did, however, inspire some musical artists to create powerful tributes to their experience, though some of those are seldom seen and others have been deeply misunderstood. Join us for an interactive session where we will watch and discuss performances that provide profound insight into both the experiences of Vietnam veterans, but also the psyche of the nation as a whole as we reckon with the legacy of one of our longest wars.
Join Efren Buzzo, a professional dance and fitness instructor, to learn some new dance moves while getting your heart rate up! In this class, Efren will focus on Salsa and Reggaeton.
