Welcome to Mrs. Gehm's 5th Grade! Please know that I am here for you through the class email or calling when teachers are at school. I check my email many times throughout the day, so please use this when you have questions or concerns. I can be reached by email at vgehm@m289.org or by telephone at 815-539-6237 Extension number 115 . During school hours, when students are present, you may leave a message. As well, you can communicate with me through TeacherEase or Apptegy. On most weeks, I will email a newsletter home. This will let you know any information needed for our classroom for the following week.
Personal Information: I have been married to Matt Gehm, an English and History teacher at Mendota High School, since 1990. We have 2 sons. Our older son, Jon, and daughter-in-law, Whitni live in Aurora. Jon teaches and coaches at Rochelle High School and Whitni practices law. Our younger son, Payt, and daughter-in-law, Taylor live in Lakemoor, IL where they both teach music. Payt teaches in Wonder Lake and Taylor teaches in Vernon Hills. In addition, we have a very spoiled dog, Lester, and our independent cat, Gus. I graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1988. I later received my Master's Degree from Rockford University in 2004. Before teaching at Northbrook, I taught 4th and 6th grades at Streator Woodland. Then, when my sons were born, I did daycare and tutored until my younger son started kindergarten. At that point, I went back to teaching in 2002 at Northbrook and have been happily teaching 5th grade ever since! :)
Welcome to fifth grade for the 2023-2024
school year at Northbrook.
Some friendly reminders:
***Students are welcome to bring a clean water bottle to have at their desks if they wish. :)
***Please practice math facts and read for at least 15-20 minutes per night. Students need to know their math facts like they know their colors, without thinking about them.
***STAYING ORGANIZED: Each student will have a red take-home folder that I give them to use every day. One side will be for papers that stay at home and the other for homework and papers that need to be signed and returned the next school day. As well, each student is expected to write in their planner daily. I will write the homework/what we did on the board daily and they are responsible for writing this down. Between the red take-home folder and the assignment notebook, the students are then responsible for getting their work done daily. This is a habit needed not only for success in fifth grade, but also for years to come. :)
For our curriculum this year, we will be using the following:
Math- Go Math
Reading- Wonders and many novel units
Social Studies- Savvas: My World Interactive
Science- Mystery Science, Generation Genius, and monthly Science World magazines
Language- We will be using various materials for grammar. We will be incorporating our writing with other subjects such as reading, social studies, and science.
