Simplified High Point Scoring

HIGH POINT RACE SCORING (Simplified)

Note: In 2012, Craig Strand changed the High Point Scoring from Rinderle B system to a simpler equation. While this does not have the same distribution as the more complex system, it does provide the essential result of giving those winners of races with larger fleets a higher score.

High Score example

EXAMPLE:

In a 10 boat fleet (N=10), the winner receives 10 points (p=1 and 10-1+1=10)

Subsequent finishers score the same formula: e.g. 8th place in a 10 boat fleet gets 3 points (p=8 and 10-8+1=3). The formula establishes that all those who 'compete' (i.e. come to start a race) will get at least a point. Those who do not 'compete' in a race score 0.

So, in any race, substract your finishing place from the number of competitors and add 1 for your high point score.

All other boats that compete in that race, including any that finish and thereafter retire or are disqualified, will score 1 point. Boats that do not compete in that race (DNC) will score 0.

September 27, 2012 AMENDMENT #2

After reviewing the above scoring formula and, in particular, the last sentence (Starting "All other boats that compete. . . "), the scoring committee has decided that the scorings for DSQ and OCS as noted below are incorrect. DSQ and OSC should both receive 1 point as per above. The DNE score is a special case where a competitor does not enter the race correctly with a current fleet member on board (Rule 7).

Also, after reviewing the scoring codes in the sailwave programme, it was noted that scores were incorrect when boats were black flagged or came to the starting area but failed to start properly. The number of competitors in a series longer than a regatta should include those boats that come to the starting area intending to race but fail to start properly, fail to finish, retire after finishing, or are disqualified. Therefore some races (in particular where boats were BFD) have been adjusted so that the high point scores reflect the number of competitors just as they were for OCS or DSQ previously.

April 27, 2012 AMENDMENT #1 (Provisional)

Boats racing but not registered in a Fleet One Series will be scored DNE (.2 point). This is a disqualification that can be discarded from the series total and finishing positions of boats will not change. This is so that the total number of boats in the race are counted in the High Point system and the relative finishes of Fleet One boats remains the same.

This is different from a DSQ or OCS score (.2 or .5 respectively) where positions of boats are moved up in scoring.
