Elementary Summer Reading
This year, students will be encouraged to read or be read to as much as they can from their favorite authors and about their favorite topics! Keeping in mind the variety of student interests and our commitment to educational excellence, our media specialists selected books of quality that appeal to students, ignite a passion for reading, enrich and support social/emotional growth, and enhance our academic curriculum. Our Media Specialists developed a book list as a family resource. There are NO specific required titles for students to read. Feel free to choose appropriate books for your unique reader. When deciding on books, have your child read a page out loud to see if it’s a good fit. If they struggle with more than a few words, it’s probably too difficult and maybe a better choice for a read-aloud.
Children who don’t read or are not read to over the summer are more likely to fall behind the following year. Research has shown that by the end of 5th grade, some children who do not read over the summer are nearly three years behind their peers in reading skills, compared to those who engage in summer reading. Here are some ways you can help your child grow as a reader:
Read to or with your child. We’re never too old for read-alouds!
Share picture books - they’re for everybody! Create stories together with wordless picture books.
Give your child the opportunity to make their own book selections - any and all reading is good!
Show your child that you value reading by letting them see you read books you enjoy.
Nonfiction books (including biographies) are interesting, informative, and an important part of our instructional framework.
Audiobooks are a great option! Listening is an important step to becoming a lifelong and fluent reader.
Encourage your child to read (or listen to reading) for at least 20 minutes a day. This could be broken up into smaller sittings throughout the day. More reading = better reader = school success!
Get your child a public library card if they don’t already have one - it’s free!
Elementary Summer Reading Highlights:
Students will complete the Summer of Fun Calendar to enhance their growth as a whole child. Complete as many activities as you can! Color in the box once you have completed an activity. Bring this calendar to your teacher on the first day of school. An easy-to-print copy can be found here.
Students and families are encouraged to read self-selected text as much as possible. Our Media Specialists' Summer Reading List is a great resource for book selection.
Students are encouraged to participate in Read, Renew Repeat: Summer Reading 2024 from June 24th - August 9th at the Lynnfield Public Library. Kickoff will be held on the Town Common on Monday, June 24th, from 2:30-4:00 pm.
Join Barnes and Noble's Escape into Summer Reading. Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books.
Students can access their school Freckle and Lalilo (K-2) accounts through the Renaissance app on Clever. These programs can motivate students as they continue to improve their reading and math skills.
