Elementary Summer Reading

This year, students will be encouraged to read or be read to as much as they can from their favorite authors and about their favorite topics!  Keeping in mind the variety of student interests and our commitment to educational excellence, our media specialists selected books of quality that appeal to students, ignite a passion for reading, enrich and support social/emotional growth, and enhance our academic curriculum. Our Media Specialists developed a book list as a family resource. There are NO specific required titles for students to read. Feel free to choose appropriate books for your unique reader. When deciding on books, have your child read a page out loud to see if it’s a good fit. If they struggle with more than a few words, it’s probably too difficult and maybe a better choice for a read-aloud. 

Children who don’t read or are not read to over the summer are more likely to fall behind the following year. Research has shown that by the end of 5th grade, some children who do not read over the summer are nearly three years behind their peers in reading skills, compared to those who engage in summer reading.
