The Graveyard book is a very intriguing and wonderful book about a boy named Bod and the different creatures that live in the cemetery. This setting makes us think about death and things of that nature such as how these characters feel about death. This is what I will be talking about how these characters who live in a cemetery feel about death. Throughout this story we see a couple different views on death such as some believing death is a part of their very existence or an everyday occurrence or is something that is trying to be prevented.
I would like to first start talking about Bod and Silas. For Bod death is something that is almost intertwined with his story. He grew up in a cemetery were the dead reside because of the murder of his family so he is quite familiar with the feeling he was also raised by ghosts so his feelings about death is more of an exceptance than a hate from what we read in the book we can see that while Bod is a human with all his experiences with death he has come to grip with it and almost seems normal to him. For Silas The concept of death is very vague as he is not alive or dead so the concept of death to im seems very foreign but he is the guardian of Bod so it can be inferred that he himself might not think very much of death but he still has those around him such as Bod who will eventually pass away. This can tell us that Silas might not fear death but fears for the death of others.
Next I would like to talk about Miss Lupescu and Ms and Mr owens. For Miss Lupescu Death like Silas is something she doesn't have to deal with as a hound of god but because of her position she experiences the dead and such. Overall like Silas I believe she is worried more about the death of others than her own. For the owens Death is a part of life. They are already dead but still live as ghosts so to them death is completely normal. Unlike normal people they dont have to worry about dying again so to them death is truly life.
Finally I would like to talk about Jack and his group. For them they want to stop their deaths at any cost which is shown when they kill Bod’s family and try to murder him too. They view death as the end and feel it cannot happen. They are so focused on living that they are willing to kill another person with no remorse. This group Is unlike the other in how they would rather beat death than accept it as a way of life. In conclusion all of these characters feel about death in a different way and are pretty out of the norm because of their backgrounds but we learn through this that death is something everyone thinks about and is integral to our beings.
