Licensure Requirements
Some majors at the University of Lynchburg come with additional non-course requirements to receive licensure in their respective field after graduation. Additionally, the Nursing program requires a separate application process to be accepted into the program - students declared as a Nursing major but have not been accepted into the program are considered to be on a Nursing Prep track instead.
ADMISSION TO THE NURSING MAJOR
Application and Deadline
Freshman students entering the University of Lynchburg with an intended program goal of nursing should plan to apply in their second semester of their 2nd year at the University of Lynchburg. Applications are due by April 1st.
Transfer and second-degree students’ applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis following receipt of transcripts.
Application Requirements: Current University of Lynchburg, Second Degree, and Transfer Students
The following are the minimum requirements to apply for admission to nursing:
Completion of all general education credits/courses required (or equivalent) to complete the nursing four-year plan, except DELL 400-level.
Candidates must maintain a 3.0, overall, GPA.
Completion of the following Nursing Prerequisite courses (or equivalent) with a minimum grade of “C”.
BIOL 224 (with lab) Human Anatomy and Physiology I
BIOL 225 (with lab) Human Anatomy and Physiology II
CHEM 127 The Chemistry of Life
PBHL 275 Medical Terminology
PBHL 270 Nutrition
STAT 222 Introductory Statistics
PSYC 241 Developmental Psychology
ATI TEAS Test minimum total score of 58.7% (Proficient)
Testing will be in February and March of each academic year.
The test will be administered twice on the University of Lynchburg campus. Any additional TEAS testing will be outside of the institution and the responsibility of the student.
Students may repeat the TEAS test twice (3 total attempts). Each student is limited to three attempts in a 6-month period with remediation strongly suggested between each attempt.
Total score less than 58.7% after 3 attempts, when meeting other admission criteria, will be reviewed on an individual basis.
Admission Requirements
Once all admission requirements are fulfilled, priority will be determined by the following ranking:
Overall GPA
Number of hours completed at University of Lynchburg
TEAS score
Applications will be sent to all candidates who are admitted to the University and have declared nursing as their major.
Applicants will be notified of admission decisions by June 15th of each year.
Students who have pre-registered for nursing courses but are not admitted to the major should meet with their advisors to change their schedule for the upcoming year.
Meet the University of Lynchburg Nursing Essential Performance Standards and Functional Abilities for Nursing Students.
Criminal History Records Check must be completed as per the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Non-refundable nursing fees are due before beginning the nursing curriculum.
Complete requirements for clinical clearance.
REMAINING IN THE NURSING MAJOR/PROGRESSION POLICY
Students must achieve a grade of B- or better in all nursing courses.
The school of nursing will use plus and minus grades and no final grade will be rounded upward.
If a student is not successful in obtaining the required grades in nursing courses, the nursing student may repeat a course once if space is available.
If a nursing student fails to earn a minimum grade of B- on any two required nursing courses, or the same course twice, the student must withdraw from the nursing major.
A student receives the same grade in the skill/clinical as they do in the didactic portion of the class.
Specific policies and regulations for nursing majors and clinical practice are published in the course syllabi and /or the nursing student handbook.
Policies include having on file in our clinical management software with a complete list of immunizations, including hepatitis B, as well as drug screening. Prior to admission to the nursing program, a Criminal History Records Check must be completed as required by the Board of Nursing. Students are responsible for their own transportation to clinical sites.
A non-refundable professional fee and technology fee, charged upon entry to the pre-nursing courses and at the beginning of each nursing semester, covers skills lab (including simulation) supplies and standardized testing. There may be additional charges related to equipment or testing; these are listed in the Nursing Student Handbook and on the University of Lynchburg Nursing website. During the junior and senior years, the student will take a variety of tests to prepare for the NCLEX RN exam, which is required to practice.

Other Programs Information:
A student pursues the dual-degree at University of Lynchburg for the first three years. After completing 60 semester credit hours, including the General Education requirements and the required classes listed below, the student becomes eligible to apply to U.Va. as a non-degree seeking student. A minimum grade point average of 3.4, both in mathematic and science courses and overall, is required for acceptance as a non-degree seeking student. If accepted into the program, the
student will then enroll in courses at U.Va. that complete the requirements for the undergraduate University of Lynchburg major and position her- or himself for graduate studies. Once all of the requirements for the University of Lynchburg major are completed, the student earns a B.S. from University of Lynchburg, usually at the end of the fourth year.
During the year that the student earns a BS, she or he is eligible to apply for admission to the U.Va. graduate engineering program through the normal application process. A student may choose three degree options as part of this application: Master of Engineering, Master of Science, or PhD. The Master of Engineering degree is a course-based degree that is typically completed within one year. The Master of Science degree is a research-based degree that requires the completion of a thesis and typically takes 2-3 years to complete.
