At the University of Lynchburg we believe that creating art is an expansive process. Art and design are powerful tools that can be used to reflect and make an impact on our society. As an art major, you’ll experience one-on-one learning with faculty in a top-notch studio or lab setting to develop a rich understanding of traditional art applications, art history, design practice, and visual communication.
Student artist-designers at the University of Lynchburg learn to be creative practitioners and image makers who bring form to emotions and ideas through the exploration of medium, storytelling, and composition.
The art major offers 4 emphases:
Art Therapy: Art therapy incorporates creative methods of expression through visual art media and creates a dialogue and foundation for healing, expression and conversation. This emphasis will lead to enrollment graduate work and licensure. Art therapy, requires a masters and license to practice.
Art Education: Arts in education is an expanding field of educational research and practice in public schools. Upon completion of this major students will have the license to teach Art P-12 in Virginia with a reciprocal license agreement in 46 states.
Graphic Design: Students in the graphic design emphasis will learn techniques and theories of visual communication through the development of aesthetic awareness, cognitive thinking, and conceptual problem-solving. They also will learn graphic design processes involving traditional media and computer-based technologies.
Studio Art: The studio art emphasis lets students explore the principles and practices of art making, in photography, painting, animation, drawing, sculpture, woodworking and metals. Students develop their creative abilities, and expand their visual and cultural perceptions. Studio Art also provides a foundation for students who wish to pursue further formal training or continue their development independently as creatives.
