On April 17, LWV CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn released a statement declaring that the country is in a constitutional crisis: LWV Declares United States in a “Constitutional Crisis,” Announces New Initiative to Mobilize Voters.
On May 1, 2025, LWV launched the Unite & Rise 8.5 initiative, which aims to mobilize 8.5 million voters using the power of voter engagement as a cornerstone of our democracy. Unite and Rise 8.5 showcases the many ways local leagues and voters can drive change through advocacy, mobilization, civic education, and engagement.

Women Defending Democracy (WDD) Advocacy Action Plan
The National League of Women Voters launched Unite and Rise 8.5 on May 1, 2025, providing a national toolkit to mobilize state and local action. Since then, Power Playbooks have been published every three months, along with workshops available to state and local leagues nationwide. These Playbooks provide background and resources for Leagues to engage in LWV's Unite & Rise 8.5 initiative to build an anti-authoritarian movement.

Playbook 2 (August – October): Holding Power Accountable
Playbook 3 (November 2025– January 2026): Building Power Through Partnerships
Local Leagues are being asked to:
• Take collective action in their communities
• Follow the tools, guidance, and strategic direction set forth by the LWVUS
• Lead with purpose and focus
