Expectations

During distance learning, your child will complete his/her work at home. That is a huge challenge that I recognize, so we are going to take it slowly and gently. We will set expectations from the start and build on them, and with teamwork, we will help your child to thrive. Here are a few expectations that I am going to insist upon as we start. I/We will teach, teach and reteach these in the weeks ahead. For some period of time, you will need to closely supervise work time.

Expectations:

1. When your child sits to begin a lesson and directions are ready to be given, have your child “show patience”. This means his/her hands are in his/her lap and he/she has eyes ready to listen.

2. Give directions for the assignment.

3. Have your child repeat the directions to check for understanding.

4. During work time, your child needs to slow his/her hand down. This means during coloring, cutting, gluing and writing time.

5. Unless directions say, your child will use a regular pencil for all written work!! Together we will assist with proper pencil grip/scissor holding techniques.

6. When your kiddo makes a mistake, let him/her know it’s ok, and teach him/her to use the eraser to fix it. Model daily mistakes for your child to see!

7. Your child needs to learn what “quality work” means- have high standards for your child and require his/her best. This means working toward cutting and coloring on/in the lines. Scribble scrabble is a thing of the past.

8. After work time is done, your child will clean up after him/herself. Responsibility is important at this age!

9. Remember, we eat during snack and lunch, not during work time!
