Text Annotations

Think of annotations as “showing your work” while you read just as you sometimes show your work in a math problem.

Don't go crazy with highlighting or underlining—if every line is marked up, you’ll have a hard time making sense of your notes. Instead, note key phrases and emphasize sections that seem to relate to themes or greater meanings.

Example:

Read and Annotate the text. Please use the annotation tools as you read to:

1. use context clues to analyze and determine the meaning of the bolded vocabulary terms
2. ask questions about passages of the text that may be unclear or unresolved
3. identify key details, events, characters, and connections between them
4. note unfamiliar vocabulary
5. comment on passages in the text
