Reading- We use core literature novels combined with the Center for the Collaborative Classroom (CCC) curriculum to cover our Common Core standards. Through mentor texts, read alouds, mini lessons, and small group, peer, and 1:1 conferring sessions, our students learn to grow their reading ability in nonfiction and fiction texts. There is emphasis on students reading "good fit" books of their choice and doing daily independent reading. In addition to this adopted curriculum, we utilize content like Scholastic News, Lexia, Freckle, and Epic.
Writing- Through our Being a Writer curriculum (also published by the Center for the Collaborative Classroom) and additional content-specific writing assignments, students learn to write narrative, persuasive, and informational pieces that cover our Common Core State Standards. They also practice weekly letter writing in the form of a student-parent journal. Penmanship is practiced using cursive (3rd grade). Spelling is practiced using weekly word lists.
Math- Math standards are taught using the newly adopted curriculum and its online components. Additionally, we may utilize Freckle, Xtra Math, Splash Math, Happy Numbers, Khan Academy, and other online resources to assist our students in meeting the standards.
Science- Our science curriculum is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. Third grade uses Twig. Through conversation, observation, and exploration, we make learning science engaging and fun!
Social Studies- We learn about United States, California, and local history as well as our place in and impact on the society around us using the Studies Weekly social studies curriculum to meet our Common Core Standards. We also engage in the standards through websites such as Brainpop and teacher created resources.
PE- Physical Education covers stretching, conditioning, skills, and games in a structured and fun environment.
Performing Arts- Students meet with the performing arts teacher to learn about music, acting, and movement through exposure to music and cultures from around the world. They learn a wide variety of skills including reading music and improv!
