As elementary school counselors, we want students and families to understand how confidentiality works in counseling. What students share with us in one-on-one sessions is private, except in certain situations where safety is a concern. Counselors must share information if a student:
Says they want to hurt themselves
Says they want to hurt someone else
Shares that someone is hurting them
Gives permission for us to share with another trusted adult at school or at home.
With these exceptions in mind, please know that counselors may also share the skills and strategies we are practicing with your child. This allows parents and teachers to reinforce those tools at home and in the classroom.
School counseling is about creating a safe, supportive space where children can express themselves, build confidence, and grow.
The mission of the Chaparral Elementary school counseling program is here to support every child's growth in academics, career readiness, and social-emotional skills. We use a multi-tiered system of supports - including classroom lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling - to make sure each student has what they need to learn and thrive.
We believe in equity, access, and inclusion, so all students feel valued and capable of success. Counselors take on roles of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to partner with families, staff, and the community. Together, we work for systemic change that removes barriers and helps every student reach their potential in school and in life as caring, responsible citizens.
