Accelerated Reader (AR) is the independent reading program at AC Stelle. Students are required to read a minimum number of points per quarter.
Please note the following quarterly deadlines:
1st quarter: Friday, October 18th (grading quarter ends on October 25th)
2nd quarter: Tuesday, January 21st (grading quarter ends on January 24th )
(+one nonfiction book (book is separate from the AR points requirement) due by January 21st deadline)
3rd quarter: Tuesday, March 25th (grading quarter ends on March 28th)
4th quarter: Tuesday, June 3rd (grading quarter ends the 11th...last day of school)
(+one nonfiction book (book is separate from the AR points requirement) due by June 3rd deadline)
Important reminders about the AR program at AC Stelle:
Must read (and pass the AR quiz for) fiction books equalling 15 points per quarter.
Signed and completed yellow slip(s) have quarterly due dates—NO YELLOW SLIP, NO AR GRADE!!
Core curriculum or Lit Circles novels are not eligible for AR - see the list below!
May read (and pass the AR quiz for) one additional book of at least 7 points for extra credit
Extra Credit/Replacement title may not be a book turned into a movie or TV show
The signed yellow slip for extra credit or a replacement book is due by Friday, December 20th
EC book option can be used to replace a low AR or nonfiction quiz grade
Must read (and pass the AR quiz) one nonfiction book each semester (minimum of 90 pages).
The grade earned on the nonfiction quiz will go into Aeries as a separate assignment.
Students must have a signed yellow slip to take the nonfiction AR quiz.
Students can change books only with the teacher's permission before December 20th.
Core class novels, Lit Circle books, and other course texts DO NOT count toward the AR grade. See below.
AR quizzes need to be taken in my room when class time allows or on Thursdays at lunch.
AR is worth 10% of the ELA grade.
NO LATE PASSES can be USED for the AR ASSIGNMENT.
AR is due on the deadline even if a student is absent on the deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS!

IMPORTANT:
Outside/independent (AR) reading is to encourage students to read novels and texts outside of the regular curriculum. Therefore, core curriculum novels are not acceptable for AR. This means that the core novels and texts read in our district- past, present, or future - are off-limits for AR.
Some examples: Bridge to Terabithia, The Cay, The Breadwinner, Number the Stars, Freak the Mighty, The Pearl, The Outsiders, Ghost Boys, Of Mice and Men, Restart, All American Boys, To Kill a Mockingbird, Night, Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, 1984, Into the Wild, The Book Thief, Hate U Give, Restart, Ghost, etc.
