About Our Classroom

How Our Classroom Works

This is the beginning of what we know will be an exciting year filled with discovery and learning. There are a few things we would like you to know as we begin the year. This year you will have two teachers. Mrs. Eileen Hart and Ms. Astrachan will be doing a job share. Ms. Astrachan will be teaching on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Wednesday and Mrs. Hart will be teaching on Thursdays, Fridays, and every other Wednesday.

We have over 45 years of teaching experience between the two of us. We are alike in so many ways, especially our love for children and our passion for education. Our goal is to make this year an amazing experience for your child!

Rules of our community classroom:

1. Listen and follow directions the first time.

2. Keep hands, feet, body, and objects to yourself.

3. Speak kindly to others and be polite.

4. Wait to be called on before speaking.

5. Be respectful of school and personal property.

Positive Reinforcement:

Class Marble Jar--students work together to earn marbles to put in our class marble jar, when it is full, class earns a class party

Individual Incentives to redeem privileges such as... choose a prize from the goody jar, take your shoes off in class, extra recess time, lunch with the teacher, extra iPad time, etc.

Consequences:

1st infraction: verbal warning

2nd infraction: five minute break

3rd infraction: a note/call home to parents

4th infraction: referral to administration

Student "Back and Forth" folder:

Each day, your child will bring home their daily "Back and Forth" folder that will be the communication tool between school and home. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHECK YOUR CHILD’S FOLDER EACH DAY!!!!

Student "Reminder Binder":

Each day your child will write down the homework assignment in the Reminder Binder on the corresponding calendar date. Parents, please check that your child has completed all the homework and help as needed for accuracy and neatness. Then sign your initials on the designated signature line. The Reminder Binder goes back and forth from school to home daily as well.

Student Work:

Work will be sent home in their daily " back and forth" folder. It is good practice that you review this work and discuss it with your child. Work will be sent home as it is completed. Some work may be sent home incomplete-- if it has a note to "complete and return it to school", please do so, otherwise, you may complete it at your discretion.

When a math chapter book is sent home, that means that there will be a math chapter test within the next day or two. You can use the skills in the book to help your child study and review for the math test.

Students will write the weeky spelling words in the Reminder Binder. Spelling Tests will be given on Fridays.

Recess:

We will have a 20-minute recess break every day. The students will need to bring in their own individual snack on a daily basis (even if they are buying a school lunch). Please send in a snack and water bottles that can be opened easily by the child. Please make sure that your child’s snack is healthy.

Birthdays:

When it is your child’s birthday, you may send in a small item such as pencils, stickers, a birthday book donated to our class in honor of the birthday student, or an item from our wish list donated to our class . We will sing "Happy Birthday", and we will be sure to make the birthday child feel extra special! In keeping with district policy, please DO NOT SEND IN FOOD ITEMS. If birthday invitations are sent out at school, there must be one for each child in the class.

Centers:

Literacy centers provide students with opportunities to focus on independent practice with reading, writing, and spelling, while providing time for us to work in small group instruction.

Volunteers:

Many volunteers will be needed throughout the year. However, the first few weeks of school, we ask that it just be the students and ourselves. This gives us a great amount of time to become familiar with each other, classroom routines and expectations, to complete assessments which will help guide our small reading groups, and most importantly, to build our classroom community. We will post volunteer sign ups via ParentSquare after Back To School Night.

Mornings:

Second grade instruction begins promptly at 8:15. We ask that you please try to be on time each day. Our academic day is packed with educational and fun events that are more beneficial if everyone is in the classroom on time and ready to learn. In order to help foster independence within our students, we ask that parents refrain from coming into the classroom in the mornings.

Attendance:

If possible, please let us know ahead of time if your child will be absent. Please email wesattendance@lvusd.org to report an absence or you can call the Willow office. You can obtain an independent study contract through the office if your child will be missing more than 5 days of school--contact the office for more information and to complete the forms.

What A Great Year This Will Be!

We look forward to the coming year. We are certain that this year will be an exciting one. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to us about them. Please use ParentSquare for communication and be sure to send your message to both Mrs. Hart and Ms. Astrachan.
