Reading Specialist

Mrs. Casarez

I am excited to be working with your student this year. In order to help all students succeed and reach their academic potential, Bay Laurel Elementary uses a Swim to Success (STS) model that allows all students extra time during the week to receive small group instruction tailored to their particular area(s) of need and/or strength. STS occurs, generally, 3 times/week for 30-45 minutes. This dedicated time helps us to provide interventions and enrichment to every student. Students working in the Reading Lab are receiving small group intensive instruction in Reading.

Skill areas that are addressed

  • Phonics/Word Attack
  • Reading Fluency
  • Reading Accuracy
  • Comprehension
  • Reading Strategies
  • Vocabulary Development

Technology plays a key component to the Reading Lab and in meeting the needs of every student. We integrate the use of iPads in our STS sessions. Bay Laurel is excited to offer a combination of small group instruction along with technology that the students truly enjoy. This combination facilitates a love for learning.

Home Enrichment

Thanks to the PFA, we are able to use Raz-Kids, a web-based reading program. I highly encourage your student to use Raz-Kids at home on a tablet or computer. My Teacher Username is jcasarez4. Students are able to login and find their user name. The program allows the child to read a story aloud while recording themselves. Students will be able to listen to themselves read and then take a comprehension quiz to assess their understanding of the story.

In the Reading Lab, technology plays a key role in meeting your student's educational needs. Thank you to the PFA funds, use of iPads and apps help make learning interactive, hands on, and FUN! The Reading Lab has over 20 apps to help enrich learning in Language Arts.
