FAQ's
Do tryouts determine Varsity, JV, and Frosh-Soph levels of participation?
Not necessarily. The coach may determine levels of participation at any time prior to the CIF season of sport and changes can occur during the season.
Can I try out for more than one sport?
Yes. If you are selected for more than one sport, you will be placed in the Athletic P.E. class for the sport with the season that occurs first, and then you will be transferred to the next sport.
Can I play more than one sport in the same season?
There is no rule against it, but it has been very rare. The scheduling of practice and game schedules would have to be worked out on a case-by-case basis with the coaches.
Can I play club at the same time as my school sport?
You may not participate on a school team and a club team in the same sport during the official CIF season of sport. Outside of the CIF season for your sport, at other times of the school year, you may participate in club activities. (Last year’s allowance for simultaneous club and school athletics participation was a special exception due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That rule no longer continues.)
Why are tryouts held so soon?
By holding tryouts around the start of the school year, the counseling office is able to complete the school’s master schedule. If tryouts were held later, multiple schedule changes would be disruptive.
Are all sports also Athletic P.E. classes? When do they meet?
Yes, participants in sports are scheduled in an Athletic P.E. class either 5th, 6th, or 7th Period. The particular period depends on each sport’s unique scheduling needs.
What is an Athletic P.E. class?
Student-athletes selected for athletic participation are most always enrolled in an Athletic P.E. class. Student-athletes receive a letter grade and P.E. credits toward graduation. Full-time certificated faculty who are also head coaches teach the Athletic P.E. class for their own sport. Athletic P.E. classes for sports with “Walk-On” coaches are supervised by the P.E. Department in coordination with the head coach.
Can I participate in the sport but not be enrolled in the corresponding Athletic P.E. class?
Yes, but many sports require practice time during the Athletic P.E. period. This topic needs to be handled on a case-by-case basis with the coach, counselor, and Athletic administration.
When will my class schedule change to show that I have been selected for the sport?
The counseling office will make every effort to update class schedules as soon as possible.
When do I attend 7th period Sports PE?
Connect with the coach(contact list) to determine the practice schedule for your sport. Your coach and the assigned 7th period teacher will share information regarding the class.
