By the end of sixth grade, students have mastered the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; they accurately compute and solve problems. They apply their knowledge to statistics and probability in calculating the range, mean, median, and mode of data sets. Students conceptually understand and work with ratios, proportions, and percentages. Students will know the formulas for area of a triangle and trapezoid and work with the volume and surface area of 3- dimensional figures such as rectangular prism, triangular prism and pyramid. Students will solve simple equations and inequalities.
The topics covered include: ratios and rates, operations with fractions and decimals, comparing rational numbers, integers and the coordinate plane, expressions and equations, functions and inequalities, area, volume, surface area, statistical data computations and analysis. While students will be guided to master basic skills, they will continually be urged to work and think critically. These standards are challenging for all students, so your student must be ready for a brisk pace throughout the year. All 6th grade students will take a placement test before they enter 6th grade.
