Jasmine's Story

Born in July of 2005, Jasmine Torrain was a happy and healthy baby. Around October of 2005, Jasmine began to experience problems with her breathing and got very sick. She was first diagnosed with asthma, but doctors were unable to successfully treat her symptoms. In March of 2006, Jasmine's breathing had become so difficult that she was placed on a ventilator. While on the ventilator, Jasmine's doctors noticed lung damage and bacterial growth common for those diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.

Jasmine was life-flighted from a hospital in Tallahassee, FL to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL to receive emergency care, where a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis was confirmed. Since that diagnosis, Jasmine spent much of her time in the hospital. She was eventually spending time in the hospital every six weeks due to complications from her diagnosis, so her doctors referred her for a double lung transplant. Jasmine received a new set of lungs in October of 2020 and began the long road to recovery.

When she wasn't in the hospital, Jasmine continued her participation in her various extracurricular activities through Leavenworth High School, including cheerleading, Art Club, National Honor Society, Interact Club, Student Leadership, and Senior Class Cabinet. In December of 2022, Jasmine completed all of the requirements to graduate from LHS. Unfortunately, it was at this time that Jasmine's disease completely debilitated her, causing her to return to the hospital. Being too sick to receive another transplant, Jasmine passed away on December 11, 2022 at St. Louis Children's Hospital at the age of 17.

Jasmine's life ambition was to attend the Kansas City Art Institute and pursue a career in Art Therapy. She wanted to share her love for art and give back to others. One way she was able to achieve this goal was by donating her kidneys to save the lives of two other individuals. Another way is through the Jasmine Torrain Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established to honor and keep Jasmine's memory alive, rewarding a monetary scholarship to a graduating Leavenworth High School student who plans to pursue a major in art, like Jasmine. Despite the difficulties life had thrown at her, Jasmine worked hard to maintain a positive outlook on life and spread her joyful spirit to everybody around her. Today, it is the goal of her family and friends to continue her legacy and be bright spots in the world in the Jasmine's name.
