Students who take music will have the class during the regular school day. Music classes are optional, but once signed up, it is a year long commitment.
All music classes are for the whole year, are open to all students, and meet daily; the classes are structured to build on what the students learned in their 5th grade district-offered music class. Objectives are learning to read standard musical notation, learn proper technique, learn proper tone production, and prepare appropriate literature for performance. Grading emphasis is on participation and willingness to learn.
Band students will have a choice of the standard band instruments--flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Students wanting to play saxophone or drums may have to audition for instrument choice due to the popularity of those particular instruments.
Orchestra students will have the choice of the standard orchestral strings: violin, viola, cello, or bass.
Instrument choice may be limited; however, we will make every attempt to provide instruction on the instrument of choice.
Ukulele students can play either a soprano, concert, or tenor ukulele (size dictated by what is comfortable). Head to the ukulele page of our site for an informational video on the various sizes and price points.
Choral students will receive instruction in vocal technique and sight-singing, with emphasis on performance.
If you didn’t not sign up for a music class but have changed your mind, don’t worry! There’s still time! Simply call the East Avenue office (925) 606-4711 and let them know you'd like to add music. Please include your child's first and last name, ID number, and which class your child would like to take.
