To create individuals of great character, built through resiliency by dealing with challenges they will face in the great sport of volleyabll. We will make these individuals accountable for the responsibilities and expectations set forth for them during the season and after the season and show them what true commitment means. After these individuals are done participating in our program, we want them to be trustworthy, hardworking, respectful and spiritually sound citizens of thier community.
We as a coaching staff have met and provided some insight and self reflection as to how we can better serve the players of Lutheran West in following this mission statement. It isour goal to do this as a family/community through a better understanding of our expectations that are listed below:
Be on time. Part of being an adult is having the responsibility of being on time. It is the PLAYER'S responsibility to arrange a ride and be on time for the following:
Practice - If you are not 15 minutes early, you are late!!
School - School. tardies and unexcused absences are unacceptable.
Games, Bus & other Volleyball Activities - If you are not 15 minutes early, you are late!
Attitude. Your attitude is reflected through behavior and body language.
It is an expectation that you do not geture ormake comments towards the refs or line judges.
Be Positive - No reactions to errors, teammates mistakes, getting subbed out. of game etc. Positive comments toward teammates is encouraged. Make sure you understand that your body language speaks louder than words! Hustle on and off the court!
Be the Teammate you would want others to be. Cheer for others and be encouraging!
Coachable. To become an employable adult, you need to become a coachable young woman. The skils of each are the same.
Being coachable is LISTENING to instruction, UNDERSTANDING what it means and APPLYING what you learned.
Shaking your head, rolling your eyes and talking back are signs that you do not respect what you have heard.
Effort.
Give 100% effort 100% of the time. Effort is a skill that takes no talent to perform. It is a habit, and we are creatures. of habit. If. you. learn to work hard now, you will learn to do it for the rest of. your life.
Actions to show effort:
Being in a ready position all the time
Relentless pursuit defensively
Preforming fundamentals such as: calling the ball, proper footwork ect.
Accountability. "A man's word is all he has." If you are a part of the volleyball program you are going to be held accountable to do many things that will also help you become a productive member of society.
Run to shag balls and hustle to the coach in practice.
Be on time, all the time.
Apologize for mistakees and take ownership. Taking ownership means that you stop pointing the finger at everyone else for the mistakes you made and work to correct them.
Positivity through adversity.
When the ref makes a call you do not agree with, shag the ball. and get ready to play with no other reaction other than motivating teammates.
When a teammate makes a mistake, you encourage them to play harder, better and smarter.
If you get taken out of the game for a mistake, a break, match-up change ect. you jog off the court, get a drink, stay engaged and get ready to get back in the game.
At any time you feel you are having. something taken away from you (position, playing time, starting position ect.) you view it as a challenge and work harder without complaining.
Leadership. On and off the court.
Staying drug free. This includes any type of mood altering drug or substance. You are a reflection of our program and community. We take pride in both of these things and expect you to reflect on us in a positive way.
Attending other athletic events. We all expect other students to come watch our events, we need to go and support other Lutheran West athletes. Go as a group, sit together, be engaged in the game and do not forget to give each other repect on social media.
Grades. Getting good grades takes discipline. Similar to the discipline it takes to be a great volleyball player. We expect all of you to try the best you can to receive respectable grades.
Social Media. Represent yourself and the Lutheran West community in a positive manner.
Character. Good character is doing what is right even when no one. is looking. We expect all of you to do. the "RIGHT THING."
Culture is something everyone feels, but cannot see. To devlop a strong culture you need a team of individuals who are focused on a collective purpose greater than themselves. I want to create a "Culture of Excellence" at Lutheran West High school. I want us to adopt an attitude that no one can outwork us, no one can meet our standards and no one strives for perfection like we do. A team willing to sacrifice the "me" for the "we."
To create a strong team culture, I will emphasize "mentorship of management." I want the team to have a sense of ownership in the planning, problem solving and goal setting. Cultivating leadarship is an important part of creating the culture of the team. I believe this will give the team a sense of shared ownership in the collective vision. Changing the culture at Lutheran West is not something that will happen overnight. By creating an environment of trust, we can create a "Culture of Excellence."
Set standards high.
High standards for student athletes begin in the classroom. Standards also need to be set high in practice. The athletes have very little time to play volleyball, and to excel at it they must put that time to good use.
I will encourage team responsibility. Positivity and negativity are infectious; the same is true for culture. Everyone holds responsibility for how they want the team to be. They need to take ownership and put it into practice.
I will have athletes involved in goal setting and culture expectations. I want to create an environment of trust, where we can talk openly and constructively, without taking offense. I want athletes to have a sense of ownership and pride in what we are building.
Outwork the competition.
We need to work harder than our oppenents every day in practice. Even if we win the conference, we need to outwork the team that got second. Never be satisfied with where we are at. There is always an opportunity to get better.
Instill Confidence.
When an athlete knows thier coach has confidence in them, they are more likely to have confidence in themselves.
Hold everyone accountable.
I will hold the athletes accountable for getting better every day, making the most of their time in practices, scrimmages and games and making the most of their time at Lutheran West High School.
I will also hold myself accountable. I will strive to get better every day. No coach knows everything or knows all the answers. I know I need to be adaptable and be a student of the game. Learning is ongoing.
Expect to win.
We cannot go into a game expecting to lose. Athletes feed off thier coaches. We need to practice, work and play like winners, to be winners.
Never be satisfied.
We need to never be comfortable. When teams are never satisfied, they work harder and continue to get better.
Great teams expect to win day in and day out. They practice like champions. They work hard and take pride in what they do and accomplish. They remain focused on the collective vision, which allows them to be better able to fulfill thier individual roles. They are focused on collaboration and have a sense of ownership of their contribution. to the shared vision. Most of all, they are never satisfied. I believe we can be a great team and I look forward to creating that Culture of Excellence at Lutheran West High School.
