Creative expression is an innate human instinct, a tradition of all world cultures, and an increasingly important skill in contemporary society. The Art Department strives to teach students about the technical principles of a variety of art forms, to expose them to a diverse set of artists, styles, and movements from art history and contemporary art, and to provide them with the freedom to create expressive pieces of art. The development of technique, exposure to historical and contemporary arts, and freedom of expression are all integral to empowering students with the skills to be independent, creative, analytical, and critical thinkers, as well as successful artists and literate audiences of the arts.

Intro to materials, elements, and basic principles of art, while emphasizing the importance of play.

Growth of artistic knowledge, skill, and technique while engaging with expression.

Refinement of conceptual knowledge and skill while developing personal artistic voice.

*At the Primary (K-2) and the THES (3-5)- students participate in Art class 1X per week.
*Lessons align with the MA State Standards in Visual Arts Education and the focus is put on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design
*Materials used vary based on the available budget, location of the Art rooms and availability of sinks in the Art rooms but could include...a variety of 2D and 3D Art including...painting, drawing, mixed media, collage, model magic, etc...
*K-5 students are exposed to artwork from a variety of Children's Book Illustrators , Famous or well known Artists and varied cultures

At the Middle School students have a general Art class and an Art Enrichment.
Art
Focus is put on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.
Materials used could include: Painting ( acrylic, tempera and watercolor) , Drawing ( pencil, chalk and ink) , Mixed media , ( paper , foil) and Sculpture (plaster and clay)
Art Enrichment
6th grade: Social Studies based Art
7th grade: Group and individual projects focusing on 3D artwork
At the High School we have three tracks of art classes available to students.
Traditional Art:
Drawing & Painting, Sculpture, Studio Art, Choice Based Art, Watercolor, Ceramics I & II, Honors Art, and AP Art and Design (2D, 3D, and Drawing)
Narrative Art:
Illustration, Animation
Commercial Art:
CAD, Graphic Design

Heidi Quinlivan
Heidi Quinlivan
Heidi is an Artist/Art Educator with 27 years of experience teaching the Visual Arts to PreK-HS students in MA. She received a BFA from UMass Dartmouth and an MEd in Elementary Education from Worcester State University. Ms. Q. has also taken numerous additional courses in varied art mediums and techniques such as pottery/ceramics, watercolor... In her free time she enjoys a variety of activities with her three very artistic adult children.
Robin Warren
Robin Warren
Robin Warren is a middle school art teacher with 28 years of teaching experience. She received her BA in art education from UMass Dartmouth and her Masters in middle school education from Worcester University. She became interested in art because her dad drew cartoons for a hobby and her grandfather was an oil painter. Outside of teaching Robin enjoys weightlifting , traveling and spending time with family
Josh Rusack
Josh Rusack
Josh Rusack is a high school teacher with over 15 years of experience. He received his Bachelor's Degree in mathematics from Framingham State College in 2010 with a selection of art courses to continue growing artistically. A majority of his career has been spent as a mathematics teacher with a touch of art sprinkled in. It was his interest in art growing up, through high school, and into college that inspired him to get his art license to supplement his appreciation for mathematics. Outside of teaching, Josh enjoys sports, wood working, cooking, baking, and finding ways to learn something new.
Amy Monahan
Amy Monahan
Amy Monahan is a high school art teacher with 13 years of teaching experience. She received her BA in Art Education from Ithaca College and her MA in Art Education from Boston University. She has taught all over the Northeast in Lawrence, Baltimore, and most recently in Ithaca, New York. She has knowledge of a variety of techniques and currently teaches Studio Art and Ceramics. Outside of the classroom, Amy enjoys spending time with her family, running, skiing, and hiking.
Scott Barry-Grove
Scott Barry-Grove
Scott Barry-Grove is an artist with 14 years of teaching art at the high school level. He received his BFA from UMass Dartmouth in 2007 and MFA from MassArt in 2011. He is knowledgeable in a wide range of artistic practices and currently teaches AP & Honors Art, Drawing & Painting, Sculpture, Watercolor, and is the High School Unified Arts Department head. When not teaching Scott enjoys spending time with his family, painting, and working on projects around the house.

I began taking art classes at Lunenburg High School my sophomore year in the fall of 2022. I was enrolled in Drawing and Painting that fall and the following semester I took Watercolor. My Junior year I was recommended to take Honors Art and the next year I had the opportunity to take AP Art as well as Sculpture, Ceramics, and Choice Based Art. My teachers pushed me to always test my skills when it came to my art work. They helped me find myself as an artist and taught me skills I am forever grateful for. Art is where I was able to express myself and be me through all of the hardships of high school. The many classes offered expanded my palette to the world of 3D art, a realm I never saw myself entering. I am now currently a freshman at Massachusetts College of Art and Design majoring in Illustration and if it weren’t for my numerous positive experiences in the many art classes I took throughout high school I would not be pursuing art in college. I have the art department at Lunenburg High School to thank for getting me to further my art career into my adult life.
