LISD Career and Technical Education

The HVAC and Sheet Metal program of study focuses on occupational and educational opportunities associated with installing, servicing, or repairing heating and air conditioning systems. The program of study addresses fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings.

Students completing this course of study will earn their Intermediate HVAC Certificate and walk in LSCO's graduation if they choose. All courses are taught in person.

The additional dual credit courses offered through Lumberton ISD are not covered by Lamar State College – Orange. LSCO will be providing an instructor to the LHS campus to offer these courses, therefore a fee will apply.

Course fees:

$45 per credit hour = $135 per course

$14 per credit hour for books and supplies = $42 per course

Total cost for each course = $177 per semester.

Some students may choose to opt out of purchasing books and supplies. Please note that course fees and availability may change each academic year.

Level 2 HART 1401/HART 1403

HART 1401 - Basic Electricity for HVAC (Level 2 - Fall)

Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of electricity, electrical current, circuitry, and air conditioning devices; apply Ohm's law to electrical calculations; perform electrical continuity, voltage, and current tests with appropriate meters; and demonstrate electrical safety.

HART 1403 - Air Conditioning Control Principles (Level 2 - Spring)

Pre-Requisite: HART 1401

A basic study of HVAC and refrigeration controls; troubleshooting of control components; emphasis on use of wiring diagrams to analyze high and low voltage circuits; a review of Ohm's law as applied to air conditioning controls and circuits.

Level 3 HART 1407/HART 1341

HART 1407 - Refrigeration and Principles (Level 3 - Fall)

Pre-Requisite: HART 1401/HART 1403

An introduction to the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer theory, temperature/pressure relationship, refrigerant handling, refrigeration components, and safety.

HART 1341 - Residential Air Conditioning (Level 3 - Spring)

A study of components, applications, and installation of mechanical air conditioning systems including operating conditions, troubleshooting, repair and charging of air conditioning systems.

HART 1345 - Gas and Electric Heating (Level 3 - Spring)

Study of the procedures and principles used in servicing heating systems including gas fired furnaces and electric heating systems.

Level 4 HART 2436/HART 2438/HART 2445

HART 2436 - Air Conditioning Troubleshooting (Level 4 - Fall)

Pre-Requisite: HART 1341/HART 1345

An advanced course in the application of troubleshooting principles and use of test instruments to diagnose air conditioning and refrigeration components and system problems including conducting performance tests.

HART 2438 - Air Conditioning Installation and Startup (Level 4 - Spring)

Pre-Requisite: HART 2436

A study of air conditioning system installation, refrigerant piping, condensate disposal, and air cleaning equipment with emphasis on startup and performance testing.

HART 2445 - Residential Air Conditioning Systems Design (Level 4 - Spring)

Pre-Requisite: HART 2436-2438

Study of the properties of air and results of cooling, heating, humidifying or dehumidifying; heat gain and heat loss calculations including equipment selection and balancing the air system.
