BAMBOO BEACH BAR Story
* UNDER CONSTRUCTION *
On the iconic Barril Beach in Tavira, a project has emerged that aims to contribute to a new era of sustainable architecture in Europe: the Bamboo Beach Bar.
Formerly known as the Blue Beach Bar, the venue has been completely reinvented, becoming a pioneering example of sustainable bamboo construction in Portugal and an emerging reference for bamboo architecture across Europe. The project was conceived by Manuel Saporiti and designed by architect Luís Gama, both passionate advocates of bamboo who first met while founding the Iberian Bamboo Association.
Manuel, together with his business partner Pedro La Fuente, operates the Bamboo Beach Bar. The project was made possible with the support of Pedras d'el Rei, the owner of the site, which believed in the vision from the outset, as well as sponsorship from Dasso Group.
The architectural design was developed by architect Luís Gama, who envisioned a structure inspired by the organic forms of nature. In contrast to the rigid straight lines that characterize much of contemporary architecture, the Bamboo Beach Bar features elegant flowing curves that create a harmonious relationship between the building, the surrounding dunes, the native vegetation, and the sea. Its roof, formed by two large double-curved surfaces, gives the building a distinctive identity, evoking the movement of ocean waves and the lightness of natural forms.
The design emphasizes bamboo as a natural material with exceptional ecological, structural, and aesthetic qualities. Renowned for its sustainability, rapid renewability, and low carbon footprint, bamboo is increasingly recognized as one of the most promising materials for the ecological transition and for the new approaches to construction promoted by the European Green Deal, which encourages more sustainable and environmentally responsible building solutions.
The project brought together some of the world's leading specialists in bamboo construction. Structural engineering was carried out by Asali Bali, while the bamboo was selected and supplied by the Spanish company Bambusa Estudio, one of Europe's leading references in bamboo architecture. Construction management and execution were supervised by master bamboo builder Jörg Stamm together with the Colombian team Quincha, internationally recognized for their expertise in large-scale bamboo structures. The project successfully assembled an outstanding international team.
Construction of the structure began with a workshop organized by Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Germany), involving students from the Climate Friendly Construction program. The initiative brought together around 40 participants from more than 15 nationalities, fostering an extraordinary exchange of knowledge, construction techniques, and cultural experiences. The result was a true living laboratory for sustainable architecture, where research, education, and construction came together in a project of remarkable technical and human value.
In addition to being the first entirely bamboo structure ever built in Portugal, the Bamboo Beach Bar is also one of the very few buildings of its kind in Europe. Its completion marks an important milestone for sustainable European architecture and demonstrates that bamboo can play a decisive role in the future of construction, inspiring architects, engineers, developers, and institutions to embrace more responsible building solutions that are better aligned with nature.
The Bamboo Beach Bar welcomes visitors every day from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., serving snacks, pizzas, refreshing drinks and cocktails in a relaxed and unique setting. More than simply a beach bar, it is a place where architecture, innovation, sustainability and landscape come together to offer visitors to Barril Beach a truly distinctive experience.
The Bamboo Beach Bar stands as a symbol of innovation, international collaboration, and environmental commitment. It demonstrates that it is possible to build differently: respecting nature, embracing renewable materials, and creating architecture of outstanding quality that inspires a new generation of sustainable projects.
This project aims to serve as a starting point for the broader use of bamboo in architecture and construction across Portugal and Europe, contributing to a paradigm shift in which beauty, innovation, and sustainability go hand in hand.
