The purpose of Lufkin ISD's STEM-Prep program at Lufkin Middle School is to provide students who are high achievers in math and science with an introduction to meaningful learning experiences that promote higher level thinking in STEM-related fields.
Qualifications for Incoming 6th Grade
Lufkin ISD 5th grade students take the following assessments:
Science and Math Interim Assessments (before STAAR)
District developed comprehensive science and math assessments, including mini-assessments, CBAs, etc.
STAAR math
STAAR science
On each assessment, students can be considered approaching grade level expectations, meeting grading level expectations, or mastering grade level expectations.
A district committee will use the STAAR math and science assessments to initially qualify students for the Lufkin Middle School STEM-Prep program. The other assessments may be used if additional seats are available after initially using STAAR results.
All incoming 6th grade students are automatically considered, and parents of qualifying students will be notified in June of this program option.
Note - Performance on each non-STAAR assessment will be evaluated using the current year's STAAR cut scores for MEETS/MASTERY. If this information is not available at the time decisions are made, cut scores from the previous year will be used to make decisions.
Students may qualify for STEM-Prep by meeting requirements in one of two of the following pathways. Please note that STAAR scores will be used first. If seats are available after initially using STAAR results, other assessments and methods may be used. These are determined by a committee.
Method 1
MASTERY level – STAAR Math OR STAAR Science, AND
MEETS level or higher – on the other STAAR assessment
Example 1: Student mastered the STAAR math and met standard on the STAAR science.
(Used only if seats are available after using STAAR results)
Method 2
MASTERY level – Equivalent to mastery in one subject area (math or science) on a district-created comprehensive assessment, the Interim assessment, or a combination of assessments determined by the district, AND
MEETS level or higher – in the other subject area on one of previously mentioned options from Method I
Qualifications for Incoming 7th Grade
MASTERY level - 6th grade STAAR math, AND
MASTERY level - 6th grade End-of-Year science comprehensive assessment (created by the LMS Science Department)
Qualifications for Incoming 8th Grade
Students cannot enter the STEM-prep program in 8th grade.
Students Transferring from Other School Districts
Students moving from other districts or from out-of-state may be considered if an equivalent test(s) can be provided and approved by a committee, but the student may be required to take assessments listed above to determine eligibility.
Note: Other criteria may be used if there are available seats in the program or if any of the above information is unavailable. That criteria is determined by a committee each year.
STEM-Prep Courses
All students in the STEM-Prep program must take the following courses, depending on the grade level admitted:
6th grade STEM-Prep math AND STEM-Prep science
7th grade STEM-Prep math AND STEM-Prep science
8th grade STEM-Prep science AND Algebra I Advanced
