Students take STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) beginning in grade 3.
In high school, STAAR tests are also known as End of Course Exams, as the tests are taken at the end of specific courses.

In grades 3-8, students must pass the test in order to move to the next grade level.
