Lubbock ISD 2nd Grade Social Studies

In 2nd Grade, students focus on a study of their local community by examining the impact of significant individuals and events on the history of the community as well as on the state and nation. Students begin to develop the concepts of time and chronology. The relationship between the physical environment and human activities is introduced as are the concepts of consumers and producers. Students identify functions of government as well as services provided by the local government. Students continue to acquire knowledge of customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles. Students identify the significance of works of art in the local community and explain how technological innovations have changed transportation and communication. Students will:

  • begin to recognize the positive characteristics of historical figures that have made an impact on the community.
  • study communities and regions and evaluate reasons people live where they do. They continue to develop map skills as they use the information they have learned to this point to learn about other communities.
  • learn that people, individually and in groups, change communities. Students learn that members of a community share values that they celebrate, and that individual good citizens make choices that change communities.
  • study about how governments provide for the community and about the leadership of public officials. Students will deepen their understanding of the functions of government; they also learn about services provided by the government and how those services are paid for.
  • continue to think about choices and decisions people make in society and the consequences, both positive and negative, of choices made. They also consider how work provides income so people have options. Students then apply basic economic concepts to the larger world as they learn about how natural resources become products and about the interdependence of being a producer and consumer.
  • examine the art produced in a community and the cultural celebrations of a community is important for understanding the role of cultural heritage in communities. Students will address the culture, art, music and celebrations of communities.
