STHS--English Language Development

Mrs. Tillson is the STHS ELD Department Head. In this department, we ensure our English language learners receive the best education possible utilizing the Common Core State Standards to advance their English reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills. As a department, we use data to drive our instruction and to individualize the students' experience at South Tahoe High School.

Above are the four levels of the Hampton Brown and National Geographic Edge Text which are covered here at South Tahoe High School. Edge Fundamentals and Levels A & B are taught in our ELD 1/2 and 3 courses. These courses are pass/no pass courses once proficiency is obtained to move into STEEL English which utilizes Edge Level C, many supplemental texts and integrates our English 9/10 curricula for South Tahoe High School. STEEL English is a weighted grade course. All ELD courses are Common Core aligned.

Inside the USA is a 5-10 week intensive newcomer course taught to students who are recent arrivals to the US. This course is taught in our ELD 1/2 course where after intense instruction, students will advance to Edge Fundamentals.

Inside Phonics accompanies both the Inside the USA and Edge programs for our English ELD 1- Newcomer students.

Project Based Learning

Throughout each course, students will engage in Project Based Learning units of study where they will practice grade level standards, ELD standards, 21st Century Skills, and engage in authentic learning/ situations.
