The Enrichment program at Lawrence Intermediate School includes teaching Chess to all students. In grades 4 & 5, all LIS students receive 10 lessons on how to play Chess. Twice a school year, we hold a whole grade level Chess tournament for all students. The Chess tournament lasts for 2 days, and the students play a total of 4 games. Based upon their record of win-tie-lose, the students are sorted into Gold, Silver and Bronze. The final 20 students have play-off games. It is quite an accomplishment to advance to the play-off rounds, considering the initial group of students included more than 300 students.
