Dear Families,
Welcome to fifth grade, we are looking forward to an exciting year with your children! There are many fun things we have planned for this year, including the fifth grade trip to Hosmer Point in Craftsbury on Monday, September 23. We will spend the day working together on team building activities that foster community and collaboration. Students will need to bring a bag lunch and water bottle on this day and dress appropriately for any weather conditions (we suggest layers, hats, sunscreen, etc.). All students must wear socks and sneakers. You can learn more about Hosmer Point here: www.hosmerpoint.com.
A large part of fifth grade is our beginning of the year science unit on the watershed, The River Study! This unit focuses on the ecological characteristics, stewardship and human impacts on the West Branch of the Little River. The unit is approximately 10 weeks long, with 6 trips to the river. We will be visiting the river on the dates listed below. We will need parent volunteers to assist us. Please see your class schedule below.

Each adult will be assisting the teacher with a small group of students to explore an ecological aspect of the river such as; taking a closer look at the habitats that make up the river ecosystem, temperature, pH, velocity, and macroinvertebrates. These observations and tests will help students determine the health of the stream. Volunteers will also help to supervise the safety of the children to and from the river. Students should dress appropriately including water shoes, sandals with straps or boots for the water. If you would like to volunteer or have any additional questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
This is an exciting and fun unit, and we hope some of you can volunteer and join us for any of the events that are a part of it! A Ph.D. in Biology is not required, but a willingness to learn and have fun is. Please let us know if you are interested.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Creighton

Dear Parents of Incoming Fifth Graders,
One of the many goals we share for our students is that each child will become an avid reader. In an effort to support the achievement of this goal, we have a summer reading requirement for students entering fifth grade. While we are not assigning specific titles for your child, we are asking your assistance in helping your child select and read a minimum of three good books this summer. We fully expect that most children will exceed this minimum. Please understand that your child will be expected to read one book every three weeks throughout the year, once school begins in the fall.
Fifth grade students should be prepared to do project work based on the books read during the summer. The fifth grade teachers will assign related learning opportunities during the first week of school. They will also expect each child to bring in a summer reading log (see other side of this letter) so that they can be aware of each child’s summer reading.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of this goal to encourage and improve our students’ reading habits.
Sincerely,
Fifth Grade Team
