National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence in four key areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Members of NHS are committed to academic success while also making a positive impact in their school and community. Through volunteer work, leadership opportunities, and school involvement, NHS students strive to serve others and lead with integrity.
Being part of NHS not only honors students’ achievements but also helps them grow as leaders, build strong character, and make a difference in Lees Summit and at our school.
NHS members must be seniors with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Members are required to attend all 20 minute monthly meetings. They are also required to complete 5 service projects during their membership. The time commitment for the service projects varies by project. If a student misses one meeting, he or she will need to do an additional service project. If a student misses two meetings, he or she will need to do two additional service projects. After three missed meetings, the faculty committee will evaluate the member’s dedication to NHS. If we find it lacking, you will be dismissed from NHS. NHS lasts all school year.
Meetings take place primarily on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7:00 A.M. Students should check the school calendar for the exact dates.
During the 2nd semester of their junior year, students who are interested in joining NHS will be asked to fill out a petition, complete a resume, and obtain a letter of recommendation from an adult outside of the R-7 school district. Only juniors with a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher will be given a petition for membership. Students who qualify for membership the fall of their senior year will also be given an opportunity to join using the same process.
