How to Access Schoology - for Parents

"How many times have you SAVED your child when they encountered a problem? (for instance, brought their forgotten homework to school or resolved their argument with someone)

This happens all the time. We can be very protective of our kids and quite frankly, we don't want them to have problems.

But they will. Now and throughout their entire lives.

And in fact, it's NOT our job to solve their problems. Our job is to TEACH our children HOW TO SOLVE problems for themselves. This way, they can become confident, independent, and successful individuals.

Instead of giving up or getting frustrated when they encounter a challenge, kids with problem-solving skills manage their emotions, think creatively, and persist until they find a solution." - Alexandra BIG LIFE JOURNAL https://biglifejournal.com/ or https://biglifejournal.com/pages/printables

Below is a Guide to help teach children how to solve problems

5th Grade Policies

There are many important things you and your child will need to know about 5th grade in order to have a successful year. This can be your guide when you or your child have forgotten some of these important policies and expectations.

At Home Reading

It is important that students read regularly and foster a love for reading. Reading should be a part of their everyday routine as they are learning and growing. Reading a variety of texts, helps students broaden their vocabulary and schema that can help them in everyday life.

Our Expectations

  • Students must ready 150 minutes each week from Friday to Thursday night
  • Students must log their reading minutes in their Assignment book with a parent signature
  • Teachers will check on Friday morning their assignment books and will look for 150 minutes or more and a Parent Signature
  • Students have a goal of reading 5 books each quarter.
  • Students will create a book report for each book on bookopolis.
    • Book reports should be at least Level 1 Questions for 1st Quarter, Level 2 Questions for 2nd Quarter, and Level 3 Questions for 3rd & 4th Quarter

The Rewards

  • For reading 150 minutes for the week = Students get to choose where they sit at lunch "Open Lunch" if they have this and their Assignment book signed
  • For having 5 books reported on accurately for the quarter = Students get a movie party

Assignment Books

It is important that students start creating responsibility habits as they get older. We encourage that students become more and more independent in managing their assignments and due dates. We use the assignment book daily to help students track their learning and tasks that are due.

Our Expectations:

  • Students should be filling out each subject's box that they attend each day
  • If students don't have homework, they should at least write the learning target for that day
  • All assignments, projects, FDOL's, and due dates should be written accurately
  • Assignments and Learning Targets should be written neatly and legibly

The Rewards:

  • Students will earn Open Lunch with the Assignment Book signed and their Reading Minutes goal fulfilled

Tests and Retests for FDOLs

FDOL's are Final Determinations of Learning. Students take FDOLs to determine the grade they will get on the grade card for Learning Standards. These are given at the end of units and students have the opportunity to retest.

Our Expectations:

  • SBG
  • Our Retest Policy
