On August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into public law the observance of Constitution Week. The idea of a celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a petition to Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually for celebration of this great document.
During the Constitution Week celebration, our nation aims to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution. This week of observance is designed to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. All citizens are encouraged to study the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September of 1787.
On August 12, 1998, the public law was revised in Public Law 36-108.
