This class is designed for students who seek to enrich their knowledge of music fundamentals. Whatever musical background students come from, music theory can be intriguing and inspiring. By knowing how elements of music interact to create musical style and effect, students truly become musicians and will be better able to bring a piece of music to life and communicate its essence to others. The purpose of this course is to instill the ability to distinguish, describe, comprehend, and employ music theory concepts and processes.Â
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the elements of music and to apply that knowledge through hands-on instruction in both piano and guitar. It is designed to help students develop musical independence and the skills necessary for lifelong music-making. Instruction will take place through a combination of group learning, individual work, and guided practice, with a significant portion of class time dedicated to independent practice.
This course teaches two instruments simultaneously. Students may choose to study both piano and guitar or focus more heavily on one instrument. On certain days, instruction may emphasize piano while guitar students work independently, and on other days guitar instruction may take priority while piano students complete independent tasks. Because of this structure, students are expected to demonstrate patience, respect, and cooperation, understanding that focused instruction will rotate between instruments to ensure meaningful learning for all.
