Criteria

1. Materials

The main structure of the product should be made of a material that is durable and rot-resistant so that it can withstand harsh outdoor conditions for a long period of time.

2. Performance

The product should outperform current solutions by greatly decreasing the population of lanternflies more than the current solutions.

3. Ergonomics

The product should not require active human effort to try and prevent the Lanternfly’s habits.

4. Service Life, Durability/Maintenance

The product should function properly with some maintenance for at least 10 years.

5. Durability/Maintenance

The product will have a season dependent maintenance schedule based on the life cycle of the spotted lanternfly for its removable parts or pieces..

6. Operating Environment

The product should keep out a majority of all dirt, dust and water that comes into contact with it, whether it be by rain, sprinkler, dust storms, etc…. The product should easily drain what water and dirt/dust may get inside.

7. Customer Needs, Ergonomics

The product should be put up with little to no tools required. At most they can use common hand tools.

8. Target Cost

The product should cost between $25 and $50 so that it fits in the market as a superior solution. The product shouldn’t cost more than $20 dollars to make.

9. Size and Weight

The product should be relatively lightweight, but should not be moved or be affected by high speed winds.

10. Ergonomics

The product should be cleanable and washable and have removable and wash safe parts.

11. Aesthetics

The product should be visually appealing before purchase and during use. It should not be obstructive when in use.

Constraints

The product cannot harm the user, the plants and/or the other animals that come into contact with it.

The product shall kill significant amounts of lanternfly to remove a majority of the populations from consumer property.

We can only use materials that are accessible to us. It must be bought on Amazon or at a local hardware store.

We cannot use any ideas that are currently on the market.

The product shall, in some way, eliminate large numbers of lanternfly.

The product must sell for a profit so that it is a viable product.

The product must last outside without corrosion from weather or other natural causes and withstand extreme weather conditions.

The product shall not include parts that intentionally need replacement after a certain time period.

The product will be disposed of in the trash at the end of its life cycle.

The product shall be attractive to customers based on color and design.
