SUMMER PRACTICE: see calendar
There will be Summer Practices at the Shawnee turf throughout the course of the summer. These are great opportunities for you to practice, work out and do stick work drills with your teammates. All levels are welcome and encouraged to come. If you are at home in Medford, you should do everything in your power to be there! You must bring all of your field hockey gear as well as sneakers.
Sunday, August 17th, Shawnee Auditorium, 6:00 PM
We will meet the night before the first day of practice to go over team rules and expectations, discuss upcoming events and everything you will need for the upcoming season.
The parent meeting will be held in conjunction with the team meeting. We are requesting that at least one parent/guardian be present at the meeting so we can all be on the same page about the program. This is when the coaches get an opportunity to talk to the parents and/or guardians about how the program is run, our philosophy, the direction we want this season’s team to be moving into and we will be available to answer any questions you might have. The Corners Club will be organizing dates fundraisers, pasta parties and various other important things that you don’t want to miss out on.
FYI – It is a STATE LAW that you attend six practices before you are allowed to participate in a scrimmage. Missing practice will interfere with your eligibility. Beyond the 6 practices, it is the discretion of the coaches to decide when you are “ready” to play in a scrimmage/game.
As our program continues to grow and evolve, we are implementing tryouts this season for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. To be considered for a spot, players must arrive in good physical condition and demonstrate strong stick skills or goalkeeping abilities.
We are offering free practices twice a week to help all athletes improve their conditioning and skills in preparation for tryouts.
There will not be tryouts at the freshman level; however, expectations for commitment remain high across all levels.
These changes reflect our commitment to building a competitive and cohesive program. In order for our teams to flourish, it is essential that every player demonstrates dedication—not only to their individual development but also to their teammates and the program as a whole.
All Players: Monday, August 18, 2025 8:00 - 11:00
PRACTICES: During preseason, practice begins at 8:00AM sharp, please be there early to help with equipment, set up the fields & foam roll. If you need to be taped by the trainers, you must report early as well. You must bring enough water to last the whole practice as well as a snack for when given time to eat. Be prepared for our testing!
During the school year, practice begins at 2:45, please be on time every day.
You must bring with you the following items every day:
Your own water jug (you need to bring your own everyday)
Running shoes
A mouth guard (Don’t even think about trying to get on the field without one!)
Cleats/turf shoes
Hockey stick
Shin guards (You will not be allowed to practice without them.)
A cooler with snacks and adequate beverages.
This year we will complete 3 tests. These 3 tests will help the coaches make decisions during tryouts. Tryouts will not be based on these tests only.
1. Mile Run – 7:30 or under
2. Cone Run Test
3. Stick Work Test & Goalkeeper Clearing Test
You should be running varying distances between 1 - 3 miles and incorporating sprint work 5 - 6 days a week. It is also important to work on strength training, check out the routine on the Strength & Conditioning page. (Free weights at a gym or even good old fashion push-ups and squats/lunges, etc. work just as well.)
The 21st annual “Getting to Know You Dinner” will be on August 21st at 6:00pm, in the Shawnee Cafeteria. It is a “covered dish” event and each family will be responsible for bringing something. All players are required to attend! Form coming soon!
This year an online clothing form will be filled out through Sports Paradise. There are a few items that are mandatory to order; everything else is optional. ALL FIELD PLAYERS must have shin guard sleeves . The other is the team t-shirt, which has our season’s quote on the back of it. An email will be sent to you with directions and the clothing items that are available in June.
Each player should purchase a foam roller that can be brought to practice every day. This will assist with injury prevention and to make sure your muscles are ready to practice. Foam Rollers can be purchased at sporting goods stores or online at various sites. Make sure it is high density. (The white ones are not high density.)
There is a tentative Varsity and JV on the calendar, however, occasionally things change. To keep up to date with changes and to upload the calendar to your phone, visit www.olympicconference.org you can add the schedule to your personal calendar on your phone.
Although our last game of the regular season is October 30th, and the State Tournament will last until mid-November. Please keep in mind that your commitment to the team may extend until that time.
As you prepare for the upcoming season I want you to seriously consider what you can do personally to better prepare yourself to be an asset to the 2025 Shawnee Field Hockey team. What can you personally work on within your game to take your level of play to the next? What were the coaches’ suggestions for you to improve last season? What can you remember struggling with last year, what were your fears, anxieties, and perhaps disappointments? These things can serve to motivate you to work harder, sweat more, and put more heart into this team than ever before. Take this summer to reflect and specifically target where you would like to see growth in yourself and find a way to make that happen. Only you are in control of the physical condition and hockey condition your body is in by August 18. It is a demonstration of your level of commitment to the team that should not be taken lightly.
I look forward to seeing you at Summer Practices. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email (rtoliver@lrhsd.org). Enjoy your summer and prepare for preseason so you and the team can get the most out of it.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Toliver, Varsity Coach
Mrs. Green, Asst. Coach
Mrs. Dietz, Asst. Coach
