Katie Kernan, a 2013 graduate of Shawnee High School and former Shawnee lacrosse player and captain, passed away on July 19, 2014 after an 18 month battle with brain cancer.
Katie was diagnosed just one month prior to the start of her senior lacrosse season. Katie was unable to play, as she began an intense treatment of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Though tired, weak and in pain, Katie was at as many games and practices as she could attend, supporting her teammates. Katie’s character during this time taught so many the meaning of perseverance, heart, kindness, resiliency and determination. Katie’s presence and model of strength and character drove the 2013 Shawnee Girls Lacrosse team to a Group IV State Championship that season.
It is with great pleasure that we honor Katie’s #22 to remind Shawnee Lacrosse players to strive to succeed no matter what hurdles may lie ahead. Each year, a Shawnee Lacrosse senior will be chosen to wear #22 in Katie’s honor. This person is a leader and a team player. They are dedicated to the sport of lacrosse and will wear the #22 with the grace, dignity, bravery, perseverance and heart that Katie exemplified in her life.
