Interviews
Interviews
Part of my Senior Project experience included the opportunity to interview people in different parts of the publishing process. After speaking with authors, agents, and experts in publicity, marketing, and production, my knowledge of what the publishing process looks like grew exponentially, and I was able to answer a large part of my essential question. I am incredibly grateful to the people who took the time to share their knowledge with me and answer my questions.
Below you will find transcripts of three of the interviews I conducted, with people from three different areas in the publishing field. I hope you're able to learn as much as I did.
Morgan Baden is a published author, bestselling ghostwriter, and award-winning communications executive. Her debut novel The Hive, which she co-wrote with her husband, was named a Best Book of Fall 2019 by People Magazine. In our interview, we talk about struggling with deadlines, what it's like to be a ghostwriter, and how to get down and actually write. You can read the full transcript of our conversation below. Chris Hart is responsible for architectural development over at Penguin Random House, the largest general-interest paperback publisher in the world. During our conversation, Chris told me about all the parts of the publishing process, from how softwares and algorithms are used to publish a book, what goes into the price of the book, and what publishing internationally looks like. You can read the full transcript of my interview with him below. Barry Goldblatt opened his own literary agency, Barry Goldblatt Literary LLC, in September of 2000. Since then, he has helped publish dozens of bestselling childrens books, including ones by authors like Angela Johnson, Lauren Myracle, Theodora Goss, Jessie Ann Foley, Ed Vere, and more. During our conversation, he told me about what it was like opening up his own agency, how the publishing industry has changed over the past twenty years, and what he hopes it will look like in the future.
