In Band, students learn and experience the elements of music through percussion and wind instruments. We play small hand held percussion instruments as well very large auxiliary percussion instruments. We also play many wind instruments such as the tonette, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. These wind instruments require air control and finger dexterity. With these instruments, percussion and wind, we learn to read and write music using the treble clef and the bass clef.
The dance students in K- 2 explore the elements of dance as an art form: Body, Energy, Space, and Time. Most of these classes focus on creative movement as they explore dancing at different tempos, levels, making body shapes, creating movement patterns, and learning simple group dances. In 3rd grade, we go more in depth in the study of dance styles and learn about folk dances and modern technique. In 4th grade we add ballet and jazz technique and look at some master works of dance and will study the lives of famous dancers. We learn to work with partners as well as in small and large groups. Throughout the year, we present mini-productions during the school day. By 5th grade they are ready for our two combined musical productions. The dance classes are appropriate for both boys & girls.
In K-2 Drama, students explore the three drama tools: body, mind and voice. They participate in imagination centered creative movement activities while learning vocabulary including transformation, imitation, and concentration. In the older grades, performance skills such as vocal technique, improvisation, teamwork, character development, and physical expression are studied. Students exercise this knowledge by participating in mini performances throughout the year. As fifth graders, student "actors" are introduced to drama support tools including costumes, props, set pieces, and scripts. These students will be expected to have a great measure of commitment and focus as participation in performances is a privilege.
In Guitar students will explore basic musical elements using the ukulele (1st and 2nd) or the guitar (3rd-5th). Students will learn the names of the parts of the instruments and how they are played. Students will develop skills to become independent musicians.
In piano we explore a variety of musical concepts and skills using digital pianos. In addition to proper seating, hand position, and technique, we progress from reading pre-staff simple notation, to reading notes on the grand staff, treble and bass clef. The students a develop a solid foundation of note reading with the goal of becoming more independent learners and musicians, reading music fluently and solving rhythm and coordination challenges in solo and duet playing. We also explore music history and the piano, and have performance opportunities throughout the year to showcase students' developing playing ability.
Instruction in our string classes focuses on the string instruments of the modern symphony orchestra; violin, viola, cello and double bass. Students will learn the names of the parts of the instruments and how they are played. Instruction in rhythmic notation, pitch and beat prepare students for more advanced study and performance as they advance to higher grades. Students develop a solid foundation of note reading with the goal of becoming independent musicians capable of playing by themselves, in small groups and in large ensembles.
In Visual Arts, students will learn about how the basic elements and principles of art apply to their own work, with a focus on personal creativity. All students, K-5th grade will experience different art styles and media choices such as painting, drawing, collage work, sculpting and ceramics. Students will explore both 2-D and 3-D design. 4th and 5th grade Visual Arts will focus on building a quality portfolio throughout the school year.
