June 7: Early Release and Last Day

June 7th will be a 3-hour early release and our last day of Studio K.

Math

We have used our data to divide our kiddos into 3 groups between Mrs. Baum, Mrs. Ellis, and Mrs. Hamann. Each group works at a different level of concrete, pictorial, semi-abstract, and abstract. We are covering the same standards, but just using a different approach based on what the students need. Here are the standards we will be working on for the remainder of the school year. Please reach out if you would like any suggestions on how to support your child in this learning.

Reading/Writing

We will continue to work with students on decoding strategies and comprehension. Decoding strategies will be taught during our sight word instruction using the paper books that will come home on Fridays. Remember you are always welcome to contact us to get a reading bag sent home daily with colored picture books on your child's level. We will work on comprehension strategies using books related to our PBL topics. We will update the newsletter each month to reflect the strategies we are teaching. This month we will focus on nonfiction books and identifying the main topic and supporting details.

Here are some great writing experiences you might share with your child, but please remember to have them pound and tap words that are not sight words. If they are sight words, have your child remember the song we have taught them or tell them how to spell it correctly. DO NOT TELL THEM HOW TO SPELL WORDS THAT ARE NOT SIGHT WORDS.

Phonics

May 6-10

May 13-17

Super Readers learn that not only can they use a pattern to read a book, they can use the pattern and the book's ending to better understand what they read.

PBL

"How might we help our outdoor environment at epic?"

Before Spring Break, students were asked the question "How might we help our outdoor environment at EPiC?" Students brainstormed many ideas, including plants, humans, and animals. We realized that we already learned about the interactions of plants and humans in our garden PBL. We decided to focus on animals for this PBL. We also concluded that the main animals we see at EPiC are some of the smallest creatures, such as butterflies, bees, ants, ladybugs, worms, and birds. Studio K began to sort these creatures into helpful or hurtful categories.

This month, students chose which creature they were most interested in learning more about.  With their group, they researched their critter with the goal of becoming an expert.  Through animation, they will strive to teach others the importance of their creature to the earth and ultimately, to ourselves.  They will begin action steps to ensure that we are doing everything we can at EPiC to protect these animals.

We have rescheduled our field trip to Burr Oaks and will be sending out information shortly.
