Parents are often curious why their child would see the counselor. Kids see the counselor for many reasons. Some like to see the counselor to eat lunch, to share something special that has happened to them, or to talk through a small conflict they are having with a friend. If there is an ongoing problem or issue we always call or email parents.
As school counselors, we work closely with teachers to teach monthly whole group lessons. We teach about conflict resolution, feelings. diversity, empathy, etc.
"I'm getting picked on at the bus stop and I don't know what to do about it."
"My best friend isn't talking to me and it's making me really sad."
"I want to show you what I just made in art. I'm very proud of it."
"I'm new to this school, and I'm really scared!"
"When am I going to get to be in a Friendship Group or have lunch with you?
"I did a lot better on my last math test, and I'm so excited to tell someone!"
"Tim, Samantha and I had a problem at recess. Can you help us work it out?"
Parents often ask “Who refers a child to the school counselor?” Sometimes kids refer themselves by asking their teacher or filling out a counselor form. Sometimes parents call Mrs. Decker or Mrs. LittleJohn or teachers let us know of a concern.
If your child would like to talk to a counselor here is a link they can fill out to see us. (Feel free to always call or email as well).
