Not at all! As the school counselor, I spend a lot of time in classrooms teaching social-emotional learning lessons and partnering with teachers to help create a positive school environment for all students.
Students may also stop by to talk about a small concern, work through a conflict with a friend, celebrate an accomplishment, or simply ask to have lunch together. I encourage students to share with their families when and why they met with me.
If there is an ongoing concern or something significant that you need to know, I will always reach out to you by phone or email. My goal is to partner with families to support every student's success and well-being.
Parents often ask “Who refers a child to the school counselor?” Sometimes kids refer themselves by asking their teacher or filling out a self-referral form. Sometimes parents call Mrs. Eslick or teachers let her know of a concern and a student needs to talk.
"I'm getting picked on by another student and I don't know what to do about it."
"My best friend isn't talking to me and it's making me really sad."
"I want to show you what I just made in art. I'm very proud of it."
"I'm new to this school, and I'm really scared!"
"When am I going to get to be in a Friendship Group or have lunch with you?
"I did a lot better on my last math test, and I'm so excited to tell someone!"
"Tim, Samantha and I had a problem at recess. Can you help us work it out?"
"I need some ideas to help Bobby develop relationships with peers in our classroom."
"Joe has a hard time controlling his body in the classroom."
"Ethan is absent a lot."
"Patrick is new to this school and needs some special attention."
"I've noticed that Amanda seems distracted and anxious a lot lately."
"Lindsey is a great kid, but she's really shy and doesn't seem to be comfortable initiating friendships. I think she'd benefit from participating in a Friendship Group."
