Painting 1
This exploratory course provides a creative and innovative environment for students who have an interest in color and wish to improve their creative skills, learning new ways to be visually expressive. Using watercolor, acrylic and tempera paints students will explore techniques, styles and subjects. Understanding the steps necessary to develop working drawings into paintings, students will use the artistic processes of creating, presenting, responding and connecting in this class. These processes develop skills that can be applied globally when planning, thinking, talking and about their work and the work of others. This class is taken before the advanced painting classes.

PAINTING 2
Painting 2 is designed for those who have a desire to advance their work, refining their painting skills through the artistic processes of Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting. This class focuses on the use of color and how to achieve desired visual and psychological effects. At this level, students are expected to keep an art journal/sketchbook and work as both an artist and researcher. Students will develop an opportunity to self-select media and/or subject as they explore personal choices when solving problems. Emphasis will be on developing ideas and creating strong compositions. Visual and verbal communication, problem solving, decision making skills, and an increasing understanding of themselves and others are developed in this course.

PAINTING 3
Through assigned class projects and independent investigations of many artistic styles, students begin to develop a personal approach to drawing. Art journals/sketchbooks are of paramount importance as students begin to develop a personal approach to painting. Using both traditional and nontraditional techniques, students are encouraged to express creativity, be able to communicate the intention of their work, and refine problem-solving skills through the artistic processes of Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting. Students also explore presentation venues, responding to their own work and the work of others.

PAINTING 4
This class is designed for the serious student to continue development of painting skills and ideas. In-class experiences include the production and presentation of art. Communication, refining problem solving, and decision making skills are developed through the artistic processes of Creating, Presenting, Responding and Connecting. Class experiences will include research, writing and reflection, gallery visits, as well as assignments to be completed outside of class. Students will build a portfolio and reflective writing will be assessed at the end of the semester.
