TOPS Transition Survey

Don’t forget to complete the transition survey for the 21-22 school year! The intent of this survey is to help facilitate students’ transitions to in person learning for the 21-22 school year. If you have students at multiple levels, please complete one for each level. Students at the secondary level will complete a similar survey during advisory after spring break. The survey will close this Sunday, April 11, 2021.

• Pass/fail options, April 30 DEADLINE

In Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 students may elect to take one course on a pass/fail basis. Pass/fail courses that are passed are not included in the GPA, but do count for graduation credit. Pass/fail courses that are failed, however, do count into GPA and therefore affect class rank. Students may elect to take no more than one class per semester on a pass/fail basis. A course required for graduation cannot be taken pass/fail. Please contact Ms. Tebault or Ms. Capps if you would like additional information about this process.

TOPS Students Welcomed by their Home School

Parents- Your child K-4th grade student (5th grade is separate since they are going to middle school) is invited to their home school google meet lunch bunch (below). They will be welcomed by several staff members at the school and be there to answer any questions about their transition back to in-person in Fall of 2021. This is an informal meeting for students to feel welcomed back and is not a presentation for parents.

Spring Assessment Update

As noted in the LPS spring assessment communication, state mandated assessments are currently still scheduled for the spring of 2021. TOPS students are invited to complete assessments at their in person school of enrollment. Review TOPS Assessment Communication for more information about spring assessments for TOPS students and the opt out process.

ELEMENTARY

• Elementary students can transition back to in-person learning prior to the end of the school year. In the best interest of students, the deadline to make the transition to in-person learning is March 29, 2021. If you want to have your student attend their neighborhood school on or prior to March 29, 2021 please contact the principal and TOPS program coordinator no later than March 15, 2021.

Student Progress Monitoring

Your student’s current progress in courses can be seen at any time through your Pearson Observer account. This document and video demonstration provide instructions on how to access your observer account. Please click into the gradebook (the graph icon) of each course to see how your student is doing, what they are currently working on, and overall pace in the course. If you have questions or concerns please contact your student’s teacher.

To access your observer account, visit the Pearson Connexus Login site. Your user name will be the email address you have chosen in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal. The password will be the household phone number listed without any dashes, spaces, or additional characters, example 303330XXXX

Greetings TOPS Families,

As January turns to February it may be hard to believe but it is time to begin looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year. In July 2020, Littleton Public Schools committed to offer a temporary 100% online school option for the 2020-2021 school year only. This commitment resulted in our Temporary Online Program for Students, TOPS, which has provided a learning experience for Kindergartners through our Transition Services Program this school year. The purpose of this communication is to remind you that TOPS will no longer be an option for families next school year.

As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year it will be essential for TOPS families to re-engage with neighborhood schools. Schools will begin to roll out information regarding registration, courses, classrooms, transportation, tryouts, PTO, and much more. The following are ways to begin connecting back with your neighborhood school:

Elementary students:

• Visit and bookmark your elementary school’s website-check it every couple of weeks now and weekly starting the end of February. Reconnect by reading spring newsletters and other general information.

• Elementary students can transition back to in person learning. Parents may want to consider transitioning from TOPS to in-person learning this spring.

• 5th graders transitioning to middle school

  • Visit and bookmark your 2021/2022 middle school of attendance

  • Plan to attend the February 16th Virtual Middle School Information Night.

Middle School students:

• Visit and bookmark your middle school’s website-check it every couple of weeks now and weekly starting the end of February. Reconnect by reading spring newsletters and other general information.

• Middle school students may transition back to in-person learning for the 4th quarter. Deadline for making this request is February 19, start of the 4th quarter is March 8

• 8th graders transitioning to high school:

  • Visit and bookmark your 2021/2022 high school of attendance-each school has a future/perspective student section

  • Monitor email for high school information-starting now

High School/Transition Service students:

• Visit and bookmark your high school’s website. Visit it weekly starting now

• Reach out to your in-person high school counselor with questions regarding course offerings, concurrent enrollment, and career and technical education programs timelines for fall enrollment

• Visit/connect with post grad center for after-high school planning

• Monitor email for 2021/2022 information starting now

• Contact club/activity/athletic sponsors/coaches regarding fall tryouts, placements, etc.

Regardless of level, if your student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), you can expect to hear from your home school special education team this spring to begin planning for the transition back to school and any considerations that need to be made based on the IEP.

The TOPS staff will continue to support your student’s academic, social, and emotional needs this spring. The TOPS staff will also be preparing and sharing information back with in person schools regarding your child’s progress while at TOPS this year.

We appreciate your partnership this year and are committed to continuing to improve your student’s learning experience at TOPS this spring.

Attendance at live sessions is critical for students to receive academic support, important announcements and information. Absences will be marked if a student fills out the attendance forms but does not attend live session or complete work online.

If you have questions about your student’s absences or notice errors in attendance, please contact your student's teacher directly. The teacher will contact TOPS Attendance if the absence should be changed or excused. Review TOPS attendance and engagement expectations in this document.

HIGH SCHOOL

AHS, HHS, and LHS will begin sharing registration information for the 2021-2o22 school year. If you have questions regarding course selection and timelines please contact your high school directly. As this information becomes available-we will also share it with you.

HHS Students: Registration will be open from February 22-26. To help you be well informed and ready to choose your classes, Mrs. Roos and Mr. Rolling will be hosting a Google Meet on Tuesday, January 26 from 11:30-12:15 for TOPS students. Also, February 22, Mrs. Roos and Mr. Rollings will host a second Google Meet. This time, we will focus on ICAPS and CTE Programs. We will also answer any final questions you have on registering for your courses.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS

Student council worked hard to create a forum where TOPS students and staff could have a mascot and school colors. We are now the TOPS teal and gold Dragons!

Then StuCo created a drawing contest for students to create our dragon. There were 135 entries, 4 categories, and teachers narrowed down the top 3 in each. Student voting came to a close on Jan. 19th and the winners will be announced next week!

Parent Tip of the Month:

Besides reading books, give your kids some audiobooks! Audiobooks are a great way to hear dialogue, new vocabulary, and how words are used in sentences. Graphic novels are okay, too, anything to get kids on board! You can also check out how to access Sora E-Books here!

Thursday 1/7 - TOPS Attendance and Engagement Expectations

Attendance

Attendance in online learning includes participation in both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. In TOPS, student attendance is based on three components:

• Attendance and participation in synchronous sessions as scheduled by the teacher

• Daily engagement with online learning activities through Pearson and other learning platforms as assigned by the teacher

• Attendance/Check in forms (one per day at the elementary level and for asynchronous classes at the secondary level)

Absences may be marked if a student fills out the attendance forms but does not attend live sessions and complete work online. Attendance at live sessions is critical for students to receive academic support and important announcements and information.

Lack of attendance at synchronous learning sessions and lack of engagement with the asynchronous online learning activities does equate to absences. Continued absences and non-engagement can negatively impact your student’s opportunities to learn. It is critical for your students to be fully engaged in TOPS to ensure learning for this year and to prepare your student for a return to in-person learning when that is appropriate.

TOPS Attendance Line:

If your student will not be participating in online learning due to illness, appointments or other reasons -- please call the TOPS attendance line at 303-347-5120 to let us know. Infinite Campus will notify guardians via text and email if their student has been marked absent. If you notice errors in attendance, please call the TOPS attendance line.

Expectations for Synchronous Sessions

• Google Meets are mandatory unless otherwise stated

• Attendance and participation in live classes is required to be marked present for the day

• Students should arrive to Google Meets on time, with cameras on, and microphones muted

  • Teachers will let students know when cameras may be turned off

  • Mute microphones when not called upon or sharing with the class

• Participation is expected throughout the class time-this can be done through answering questions, asking questions, contributing to discussions in breakout rooms, and/or completing activities requested by the teacher

• If student cannot attend a mandatory Google meeting, please contact the teacher

• Learning environment

Expectations for Asynchronous Work:

• Students are expected to demonstrate learning by completing activities and assignments as directed by the instructor

• Electives at the secondary level are asynchronous

  • Attendance forms must be completed for these courses

  • Students are expected to follow the pacing guide provided in the course to stay on track and complete the elective course on time

  • Students may “work ahead” of the pacing guide

Dear TOPS Families,

From the entire TOPS staff we want to wish you a Happy Holidays! We hope that the next two weeks will be joyful and restful for each of you. We also want to thank you for working with us this semester as we, together, grew from an idea in July to a program serving students from every school in Littleton Public Schools. Through the tireless efforts of teachers and staff, in partnership with families, TOPS has become a community of learners.

Moving into the new year and semester, TOPS will continue to improve the learning experience of students, create additional opportunities to connect and build community, partner with parents to increase student growth, and collaborate with brick and mortar schools to maintain connections and support students effectively.

Students will return TOPS Tuesday, January 5. Secondary schedules will be available January 1, 2021. First semester grades, for secondary students, will be posted in Infinite Campus January 8th.

Schedule Change Requests for both middle and high school will be accepted until January 15, for academic errors only.

Thanksgiving Food Distribution

Several area groups, and LPS Nutrition Services, are providing resources for Thanksgiving meals.

• LPS Nutrition Services - FREE MEALS FOR THANKSGIVING BREAK! Nutrition Services is excited to be providing meals for your students when we are not in session over the Thanksgiving break. Meals will be FREE of charge and available for pickup on Saturday, November 21st from 10am - noon at Littleton High School (south side of building off of Littleton Blvd in the bus loop). Your meal bag will include 7 days worth of breakfasts and lunches plus a few recipes for a tasty pumpkin dessert (pumpkin puree included). Make sure to sign up by November 14th so we can plan for your pick-up.

TOPS Updates - November 13, 2020

Attendance

Please remind your student to complete the attendance form for each class every day (just one daily form for K-5 Students). Absences may be marked if a student fills out the attendance forms but does not attend live session or complete work online. Attendance at live sessions is critical for students to receive academic support and important announcements and information. If you notice errors in attendance, please call the TOPS attendance line 303-347-5120. If your student will not be participating in online learning due to illness, appointments or other reasons, please use the attendance line to let us know.

Return to in-person learning

• Elementary students: May return to in-person learning at any time during the semester. One move per semester.

• Middle School students: May return to in-person learning at the quarter or semester. Students wishing to return at the end of first semester must make the request no later than the end of day on Tuesday, December 1st.

• High School and Transition Services students: May return to in-person learning at the semester. Students wishing to return at the end of first semester must make the request no later than the end of day on Tuesday, December 1st.

This process will not be impacted by the districts move to temporary remote learning for other schools and programs as communicated on 11/11/2020.

To make this request please email the principal at your student’s in-person school of enrollment and the TOPS program director nfrasier@lps.k12.co.us requesting your student be transferred from TOPS back to their in-person school of enrollment.

Grades and Report Cards

• Secondary Midterm/Quarter Grades: TOPS quarter ended October 30 for secondary students. Grades were available in Infinite Campus on November 9th.

• Elementary Trimester Grades: End of the 1st trimester is Friday, November 20th for elementary students. 1st Trimester Report Cards will be available in Infinite Campus on Wednesday, December 2nd.

• SAT Update: Deadline November 24 Collegeboard has added two dates for SAT Vouchers (Saturday, November 7th and Saturday, December 5th) For current seniors (Class of 2021): Due to our school closure last spring, the Colorado Department of Education is offering current seniors the opportunity to take a free, state-sponsored SAT. This test is optional and can be utilized for college admission this fall. Please complete this form to receive your SAT Voucher. Once you receive your voucher follow these instructions to register for the SAT. If you run into registration issues call the Collegeboard helpline at 1-866-756-7346.

Advisory (Secondary Only)

Advisory meets Tuesday/Thursday (11:32-12:13). Check your Advisors website for meeting links. Advisory is a great time to connect with peers and advisor--ask questions, get help navigating TOPS and have a little fun as well. Students will receive a Pass/Fail grade based on attendance and participation, so attendance at Advisory meetings is required.

Return to in-person learning

• Middle School students: May return to in-person learning at the quarter or semester. Students wishing to return at the end of first semester must make the request no later than the end of day on Tuesday, December 1st.

• High School students: May return to in-person learning at the semester. Students wishing to return at the end of first semester must make the request no later than the end of day on Tuesday, December 1st.

To make this request please email the principal at your student’s in-person school of enrollment and the TOPS program director nfrasier@lps.k12.co.us requesting your student be transferred from TOPS back to their in-person school of enrollment.

Grades and Report Cards

• Secondary Midterm/Quarter Grades: TOPS quarter ends October 30 for secondary students. Grades will be available on Infinite Campus on November 9th.

• Elementary Trimester Grades: End of the 1st trimester is Friday, November 20th for elementary students. 1st Trimester Report Cards will be available on Infinite Campus on Wednesday, December 9th.

Additional Enrollment and Transition Information

Each grade level website has a new Enrollment tab that provides information about transitioning to hybrid or in person learning in addition to information about the middle school transition for 5th graders and high school transition for 8th graders. The high schools have shared information about virtual showcases and shadow days. If you have an 8th grader, make sure to review the information! Middle schools continue to update transition information for incoming 6th graders. Contact your home school for more information.

  • Learn from district Restorative Practice Facilitator Rita Danna about proactive, positive ways to address conflict. Find ways to restore relationships and competencies versus shame and punishment. The training is limited to 50 participants and will be held Wednesday, November 4th, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm Link to Register
