Math: This week in math we continued to look at shapes and sorted them by attributes. We also got to solve some shape riddles. We would listen to some clues and then take away the shapes that didn't match that clue. We ended the week with time. We discussed what an hour, minute and second was. We talked about tasks that take different amounts of time.
Reading: In reading this week we read words with /or/ and /ar/. We read a story about Tic having a sleepover at her house. We wrote about the beginning, middle, and end. We also answered questions about the story as well.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on writing a book review about our favorite book. We started with introducing ourselves and gave the title of the book. We then wrote about important things that happened without giving away the ending, we gave our opinion and then recommended the book.

Week of February 23-28
Math: This week in math we continued to talk about 3D shapes. We took a shape walk around our classroom and school looking for 3D shapes. We learned a few work places where we had to make different 3D shapes as well.
Reading: In reading this week we looked at words with the ending -all. We also reviewed syllables and drew syllable breaks. For example: baseball has two syllable and you would draw the syllable break between base and ball (base/ball).
Science/Social Studies/Writing: We began the week with a field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science. We got to pretend to be dinosaurs and one of us turned into a fossil. We got to dig for fossils, write about them and figure out what part of the dinosaur they came from. We had fun exploring the museum too. The rest of the week we reviewed what we learned about rocks and then wrote about them in our Things I Know book.

Week of February 17-21
Math: In math this week we continued to talk about 2D shapes and their attributes. At the end of the week we looked at 3D shapes. We looked around the room to see if we could find different 3D shapes. We then described what we noticed about each 3D shape.
Reading: In reading this week we learned that there are some long vowel trickers (open, paper, music) Sometimes when we read these words we might have to try the vowel as a short sound and as a long sound to see which way makes sense. We also read a story about wrote about events that happened, our favorite part, and sequenced the events.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we learned about rocks and how they are made. We learned that Metamorphic rocks are made with heat and pressure. We learned that Sedimentary rocks are made from layers of sand. We also learned about Igneous rocks and that they are formed from very hot molten rock deep under the Earth's surface. We ended the week with a geologist coming to visit and talking to us about rocks.

Week of February 10-14
Math: In math this week we began looking at 2D shapes. We had to tell our teacher how to draw different shapes. We learned that we have to be very specific with our directions. We looked at different shapes and discussed how we can sort them by attributes (color, size, shape, number of sides, etc). We ended the week playing a game called Last Shape in Wins. We have to put different shapes onto a bigger shape to fill it in. The last person to place a shape wins.
Reading: In reading this week we continued to talk about contractions. We learned that it is = it's and we will= we'll. We read a story about the Superkids going to the lake. We worked on answering questions about the story as well.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We picked our favorite president and wrote about what we learned.

Week of February 3-7
Math: In math this week we started the week solving more penguin story problems and showing our work. We took our unit assessment the next day. We ended the week making penguin pairs and worked on counting by 2s.
Reading: In reading this week we looked at the ending /ay/ and learned that it says /a/. We looked at Golly as a character and described him with words. We read the story Golly Helps and discussed cause and effect. We also wrote about the characters, setting, problem and solution.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we continued to work on our How-To writing. We learned that you need to start with a topic list, then write about the things you need, and then you write using transition words.

Week of January 27-31
Math: In math this week we continued to work on solving addition and subtraction problems with missing addends. We had to show our work as well. We also looked at true and false equations. Is this true or false 8 =9+2 (false) 10-3=5+2 (true).
Reading: In reading this week we looked at words with y at the end and learned that sometimes y says /i/ or /e/ at the end of the word. We also read two stories about pigeons and compared them.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we began the week looking at information text and that sometimes it will teach us how to do something. We wrote down steps of how to walk in a line and how to make a valentine. We also wrote a topic list of all the things we know how to do.

Week of January 20-24
Math: In math this we worked on writing fact families for numbers up to 20. The next day we continued to write fact families (2 addition equations and 2 subtraction equations using 3 numbers) and then picked an equation and wrote a story problem to match. The next day we looked at doubles and wrote equations to match. We ended the week looking at equations and seeing if it is an add nine equation, add 10 equation, doubles, or doubles plus one.
Reading: In reading this week we looked at irregular contractions. ( do not = don't will not= won't cannot= can't). We also read a story about a pigeon who laid eggs and answered comprehension questions about the story. We also read a book about homing pigeons. We had to write down 2 facts that we learned.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we continued to work on writing narrative stories. We learned that when we end our narrative stories we can add a feeling or thought.

Week of January 13-17
Math: In math this week worked on solving story problems involving penguins. We worked on ways to show our work. (start at a number and count on, draw all the dots, etc) We also worked on writing double equations. We rolled a dice and then counted by twos to figure out the answer. We ended the week with looking at 10 and 9 equations. We noticed that 10+6=16 then 9+6 would be one less 15.
Reading: In reading we began the week looking at contractions. We are reading words like couldn't, weren't, etc. We learned how to write them as well. For example could not is written like couldn't. We also read a story about the Superkids putting on a talent show. We are working on writing sentences about the beginning, middle and end.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on narrative stories again. We are focusing on our leads and endings. We learned that our leads should introduce characters, setting and tell the time as well. Our endings should provide a sense of closure and include a thought or feeling.

Week of January 6-10
Math: In math this week we used a measuring tape to see how tall we were in inches. Then we learned about Rockhopper and King penguins and talked about how tall they were. We then compared our height to the height of each penguin.
Reading: In reading we continued to work on reading words with 2 vowels together. (2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking) We read a book and discussed the problem and solution, The next day we read the story again and then wrote about how Tac felt in the story and why. We are learning to restate the question (Tac felt ___ in the story because on page___I noticed that her face looked mad.) and showing evidence too.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on writing opinions about different topics. We each got to pick a topic and then we got into a group and came up with reasons why we like that topic more than the other topic. (cats vs. dogs, space vs. castles) Then we ended the week with a debate giving our reasons. We had a lot of fun trying to convince our classmates.

Week of December 16-20
Math: In math this week we worked on reviewing for our test. We looked at missing numbers on a number line and figured out what they were. We counted forward and backwards by 10 starting at different numbers (6, 16, 26) (98, 88, 78). On Wednesday we took our test. The rest of the week we did fun math for Grinch and Rudolph day.
Reading: In reading we worked on learning that when two vowels going walking, the first one does the talking. (ai, ee, ea, oa, ay) We read a story about a toy shop and discussed the problem and solution. We also read the book How the Grinch stole Christmas and talked about the adjectives that described the Grinch. We discussed how sometimes characters do change during the story just like the Grinch did. At the beginning he was sad and mean and at the end he was happy and nice.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week worked on writing a page for our memory book. We also worked on writing notes to our parents as well.

Math: In math this week we continued to look at a number line to solve problems. We also learned two new games to play during math work stations.
Reading: In reading we continued to read with with long vowel sounds. We also worked on adding the -ed and -ing endings to those words too. We read a few stories and discussed them. We ended the week with reading a book about race cars.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we began discussing maps. We read some books and got to draw maps of our school, classroom and bedroom. We read books and learned what the 7 continents are, what birds eye view means, equator, and north, south, east and west.

Week of December 2-6
Math: In math this week we continued to look at a number line and had to come up with the missing numbers. We also worked on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers on a number line as well. We also practiced counting forwards and backwards by 10s starting at a different number. (3, 13, 23, 33) (98, 88, 78, 68) This is something I could practice at home as well.
Reading: In reading we continued to read words that have a silent e (silent e makes the vowel say its name). We then practiced adding either s or es at the end to make it plural. We also read a story about Tic getting gifts from her grandpa. She wrote him letters thanking him for those gifts. One day we had to answer the question: What was Tic's best gift? How do you know that? We had to restate the question and cite evidence from the text showing where we found the answer. (Tic's best gift was her granddad visiting her because on page 155 it said Granddad's visit is the best.)
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we have been reading all the letters we have received back from our grandparents. It has been really fun learning about their traditions and seeing how things have changed over time. A lot of them used tinsel and popcorn to decorate their trees.
We also worked on writing a non-fiction paragraph about things that we know. We started off by doing one together on Yaks. We learned that first you need to introduce the topic, then write at least 3 facts you know about the topic and then write and ending sentence (These are all the things I know about ___). We can then draw a picture and label it too.

Week of November 18-22
Math: In math this week we began looking at numbers on a number line. We started by placing the numbers 1-10 on the number line. We discussed where they should go and why. Then we placed the numbers 1-20. We talked about what number is halfway between 10, 20, 30, etc. We ended the week with using a number line numbered 1-10 to add and subtract.
Reading: In reading we continued to read silent e words. When there is an e at the end of the word, that e becomes silent and makes the other vowel say its name. We also read a story about Toc being sick. We read the story and then wrote about a text to self connection.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we are learning about Pilgrims, the Mayflower and Wampanoag Indians. We are watching some videos and then discussing what we learned. We are also writing about what they wore, the food they ate, and the shelters they made to live in. We ended the week with making applesauce.
This week we also switched classrooms for different STEM activities. We got to construct a boat to see if it would float, we made a table out of dominoes and popsicle sticks, we made balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and we made a parade route for the ozobots (mini robots) to follow. It was so much fun!

Week of November 11-15
Math: In math this week we used cubes to make different combinations of 6,7,9, and 10. The next day we got to grab a handful of cubes and compare the number to our friends. We also took a circle and divided it into different fractions. We divided it into 1/2 one half, 1/4 fourths, and 1/3 thirds.
Reading: In reading we learned that when a word has only one vowel and it is at the end, then the vowel is usually long (the vowel says its name). Here are some of the words we practiced spelling and reading....me, we, so, no, flu. We read a story about the Superkids pretending to be a princess, giant and knight. We worked on sequencing the events of the story in the order that they happened. One day we had to answer this question- How did Sal feel at the end of the story? How do you know? We are working on restating the question and giving evidence from the story. For example: At the end of the story Sal felt happy because I noticed that on page 133 the words said that he grinned. I know that grinned means to smile.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on writing letters. We started the week with writing our grandparent letters. Thank you for helping us out by sending me the addresses. We have sent them off! We are looking forward to learning about all of their December traditions from when they were in first grade.

Week of November 4-8
Math: In math this week we played a game where we had to guess a number that Mrs. Downey had. Each time we made a guess we colored in the numbers that it could not be. After that we played 50 or bust. We would look at the numbers 10-20 on a double 10 frame. We would pick a number and color the amount of cubes. We wanted to get the closest to 50 without going over.
Reading: In reading we continued to talk about -ed endings. We learned that if a word has one vowel and one consonant (hop) then we have to double the consonant before adding the ending. (hopping, hopped). We read several stories and discussed the problem and solution.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we continued to talk about States of Matter. We have talked about liquids, solids and this week we talked about gases. We learned that we can't see it and that it takes the shape of its container. We got to play with bubbles and learned that if you have a glove on you can try bouncing them. We had so much fun.

Reading: In reading we continued to talk about words that end in -ed. We learned that -ed can say (t), (d), and (id). We also read a story and wrote about the beginning, middle and end.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on writing personal narratives again. We focused on zooming in on a topic and writing about just one thing that happened. We also talked about how we could make our characters come to life by making them move and by making them talk.

Math: In math this week we took an assessment to see what we have learned so far. We also looked at sea stars and noticed that they have 5 arms. We discussed that we could count how many arms by counting by 5s. We ended the week playing a game against Mrs. Downey. We had to spin a spinner and color in the number of pennies. The first one to 40cents wins.
Reading: In reading we talked about the ending (le). When spelling (le) words some will have a double consonant if you only hear one sound in the middle. We also talked about syllables and where to draw the syllable break. We read a story about bubbles and noticed a lot of (le) words.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: This week we worked on writing opinions on our collections that we brought in. We first picked our favorite thing, then we thought of reasons why it was our favorite, next we began to write. We had to make sure we started out stating our opinion and then gave lots of reasons to support our opinion.

Week of September 30-October 4
Math: This week in math we continued to work on fact families and wrote story problems to match equations. We also practiced showing our work (draw a picture, write an equation, etc.) when solving story problems. We ended the week looking at dominoes by focusing on the double dominoes. We played a game where you roll a dice and then double it and cover that number. The first one to cover all the numbers wins.
Reading: In reading we read three poems and talked about how sometimes they have rhyming words or repeating words. We got to compare/contrast two of the poems we read. We also learned about the ending (ng). If we add a vowel to the front we can make -ang, -ing, ong, and ung.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: We got to go to the zoo and look at the animals we have been learning about. It was fun to talk about their adaptations. We also wrote about the zoo and what we liked about it. Some of us really loved getting to see the baby lion. We ended the week working on writing for our memory books.

Week of September 23-27
Math: This week we began to look at fact families. If you take 3 numbers then you can write 4 equations. (3,2,5) 3+2=5 2+3=5
5-2=3 5-3=2 Then we took one of the equations and wrote a story problem to match. 3+2=5 There were 3 dogs playing. Then 2 more dogs came along to play. How many dogs in all. Have your child show you this at home. :)
Reading: In reading we worked on reading and spelling words with the (th) sound. We also practiced coming up with real words and nonsense words for words that end with -ath or -oth. We also read a story about a pet rock. We then had to write the answer to a question (How did Frits feelings change about the pet rock in the story?) in our notebooks.
Science/Social Studies/Writing: We continued to talk about animal adaptations and their habitats. We spent time discussing Colorado animals and their adaptations. We ended the week with a project. We had to pick a Rain Forest animal and pretend that it is moving to Colorado because of the fires. We then had to add adaptions from a Colorado animal to the Rain Forest animal so that it can survive here. We got to make our animal out of clay and add the adaptations to them. We also spent time writing about the adaptions and wrote about what if we had animal teeth and tails.

Reading: In reading we worked on reading and spelling words with the (wh) sound. We also continued to review the (ch) and (sh) sounds as well. We read a story and then had to write about why we thought Ben was being a good friend to Frits.
Science/Social Studies: This week we began to talk about habitats and animal adaptations. We learned about the rain forest and some of the animals. We talked about the adaptations they use to live in the rain forest. We ended the week talking about Colorado habitats and the animals that live in them.

Math: In math this week we have worked on solving equations with missing addends using our number racks. We also worked on solving story problems by showing our work and writing an equation to match. We also practiced measuring items around the room with popsicle sticks and unifix cubes.
Reading: In reading we worked on reading and spelling words with the (sh) sound. We also learned about pronouns (he, she, her, his, I, my) and that we can use them instead of names. We also read a story and discussed cause and effect.
Writing: This week we continue to write about things that have happened to us or things that we can do (personal narratives). We worked on adding more to our pictures because pictures can add more details to our story. We also worked on editing our work as well.

Week of September 2-6
Math: This week during math we played a game where one person was the builder and one was the writer. We gave our partner a number to build and then we had to write the number of dots and the missing dots. We were working on making combinations of 10. We also learned a new game called Which Coin will Win? You have to spin a spinner and record the number of coins on a graph to see which coin will win first.
Reading: In reading we worked on reading and spelling words with the (ch) sound. We also talked about the problems and solutions in stories we read as well.
Writing: This week we began to write about things that have happened to us or things that we can do (personal narratives). We learned that you first have to think of an idea then you plan, sketch, then write.

Week of August 26-30
Math: This week during math we started using a number rack. We used the number rack to make combinations of 5 and 10.
Reading: In reading we worked on putting words in ABC order. We also read a story and learned that sometimes the author shows us things about the story in the pictures instead of just the words.
Writing: We practiced reading a story and then writing about our favorite part. This is what we will be doing with our book bags that will come home next week.
Science/Social Studies: We continued to talk about friendship and making good choices at school. We also talked about some listening techniques we can use in the classroom. Ask me about eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet and bodies still.

Math: In math we have been working on counting by 2s using twin pops and counting their sticks. We have also worked on making tally marks as a way to count too.
Reading: During reading we have been reviewing vowel sounds. We have worked on reading words and picking the correct word that matches the picture.
Writing: This week we have worked on some memory book writing and wrote about some of our favorite things.
Science/Social Studies: We have been reviewing our PAWS expectations. We got to help Mrs. Downey come up with our class expectations too. We said we should raise our hand to talk, be kind to others, respect others, listen when the teacher is talking and many more.
