CURRICULUM
Literacy
SuperKids
Goals: Implement and support student book skills, word analysis, phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding skills, vocabulary, fluency, sight word practice and comprehension
Reading is taught as a whole group as well as through targeted small group instruction.
Shared Reading takes place in a whole group setting where a Big Book is displayed for all to see. Children are encouraged to participate in the lesson focus by sharing ideas (such as predictions or connections) and read along with the teacher (to practice decoding skills and fluency).
Read Aloud takes place in a whole group setting where a book is read aloud by the teacher. Children are encouraged to participate in the lesson focus by sharing ideas. Read Aloud lessons often focus on giving opinions, making connections, doing a character study, learning about story structure, etc.
Targeted Instruction takes place in a small group setting. The teacher supports students as they learn various reading strategies. Teachers differentiate the instruction to reach individuals' reading needs and abilities.
Writing happens throughout the day in many capacities. We do Writer's Workshop, where the students have independent time to write in different genres (narrative, informative, opinion, etc.), Shared Writing, where we write along together as a class, and writing as part of cross-curricular instruction, such as during science and social studies.
Heggerty
Heggerty Is Implemented by daily 10-15 minute lessons that target Kindergarten phonemic awareness skills. These skills allow students to become proficient, confident readers and writers.
Skills targeted: rhyme, phoneme Isolation (beginning, middle, and end), blend words, syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes, segment words, syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes, add syllables and phonemes, delete syllables and phonemes, substitute syllables and phonemes
Nancy Fetzer
Nancy Fetzer is a supplemental writing curriculum that gets students more involved in the writing process. Students will learn to plan, rehearse, then write.
