My Purpose as Your Teacher (My Why I Teach):
To be a genuine person for ALL students who helps you grow your abilities and find some purpose and inspiration.
To form a classroom environment with young people who challenge their own learning using their skills to observe, reflect, critically think, inquire, collaborate, innovate/create and problem solve with purpose and relevancy.
More so, to help you see more in yourself-to embrace introspection and be open not only to old ideals, but new ones, and speak with your heart and intention toward finding your life's passion(s) to channel into purpose(s) in order to become authentic people.
To observe and care for the amazing aspects of this world and use our inquiry, criticisms, biases and qualms to affect or change it in a positive way. If anything, I want you to be more aware, to shape and change your perspective and grow with this changing world!
To grow in character and help search for meaning in how you will and do affect and contribute to the world; remember, we can always be newer, better, smarter, and grow our beliefs and character.
To accept and confront challenges and mistakes as an inevitability of life, and to grow, risk and strengthen from life's adversities, facing it with resiliency and effort to keep thriving. I want you to be able to fight when life is not amazing and to always have gratitude in your mind, compassion in your heart and the grit and fortitude in your spirit to conquer what is thrown your way!
To learn how to work with others and foster compassion and inclusion.
More than anything, I do this job for you! I am here to be the teacher you need at this moment in your life.
My "Why" (why I teach)
I have always regarded relationships as the most important asset in my life. I believe everything that befalls us in life imprints upon us, and relationships are the greatest aspects that help create who we are in part; who we are is an amalgam of our influences.
Every person has been influenced upon by someone in a positive manner. I have been lucky to have amazing people who have helped me become more, see more, and do more than what I ever thought. Because there is always something more in us, whether we know it or not, teachers, mentors, pastors, coaches, family members, peers, even that occasional stranger, allow us the ability to push ourselves beyond and find that “more” within us.
As an educator, I am one person, who is here to aid students in their journey so they may become authentic individuals.
Because I was not fortunate to have kids of my own, this is truly my way to impact and contribute to youth. I have the ability to gift others with finding more in themselves, whatever that may be. The impact we make on others, and in turn, their impact on us, is irreplaceable. The legacy we leave is what we imprint into their minds, hearts and souls. Those imprints never leave and if you show your heart and soul, you will speak to the level of their own and they will emanate it back in small ways.
"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be? -John Keating (Robin Williams) Dead Poets Society
ABOUT ME (PICS at the bottom if you want to look):
I am a Denver native-born in Englewood, CO; I LOVE my state!
I attended AHS from 1992-1996-played Varsity soccer for 4 years-won state with my coaches and teammates in 1993, 1995: Being a student athlete has always been a huge part of my life! I am proud of my past accomplishments because being a student athlete has shaped me tremendously and is a part of my identity.
I helped coached ABK for a long time as an assistant Varsity girls soccer coach-was a part of some state championship teams and runners-up! Proud to have coached amazing players and young ladies!
I am the third member of my family to have a career here at AHS: My dad, Paul Nelson, has retired from teaching, but still does driver's education; my uncle, Larry Nelson, has passed, but the Warrior Baseball field is dedicated in his honor. I have grown up with this school my entire life and I love teaching at this fabulous high school. As a youngster, roller-skating through the halls, being a water-girl for the football team, going to games with my dad, playing in the gyms, I have revered my Warrior life and continue to create my own legacy.
I went to the University of Denver on a soccer scholarship and played soccer for 4 years there. Continued to coach here at AHS on my off seasons. I miss playing. Yet, I have had amazing days under the sun, and now I can watch others develop their talents and I can continue to use what sport has taught me.
I am going into my 22nd year of teaching, my 21rst here at AHS!

"Life's not about expecting, hoping and wishing, it's about doing, being and becoming. It's about the choices you've just made, and the ones you're about to make, it's about the things you choose to say-today. It's about what you're gonna do after you finish reading this." -Mike Dooley

in seeing the hundred universes that each of them sees."-Marcel Proust

"The one piece of advice which will contribute to making you a better leader,
will provide you with greater happiness and will advance your career more than any other advice...
and it doesn't call for a special personality or any certain chemistry...
and any one of you can do it.
And that advice is: You must care."
