Hello, everybody! I'm so excited to teach Language Arts at Goddard Middle School! I'm probably one of the biggest word nerds (and proud of it!) you'll ever meet, so getting to read wonderful literature and poetry with you all the while working on grammar, spelling, and word etymology is one of my dreams come true.
Mrs. Barrows and I have been looking forward to having you in our classes and a FANTASTIC school year awaits us.
From becoming experts at writing Literary Essays and Persuasive Pieces in Writing...to delving into Edgar Allen Poe and his dark and ominous poetry...while increasing our word toolboxes with more Greek and Latin roots...all the way to learning great strategies for Close Reading in Literacy, we will accomplish a GREAT MANY THINGS together!
Just like ascending one of Colorado's spectacular Rocky Mountains, learning requires focus, caution, perseverance, patience, effort, and whole lot of kindness to ourselves and those beside us. By the end of the school year, we'll look back and be AMAZED at how far we've climbed. Getting to the top is a special kind of exhilaration.
The 2025-2026 school year will be my eighteenth year as a teacher, and I can still say that being an educator is the best job I've ever had. I taught 6th grade at the elementary level in Jefferson County Schools for seven years before coming to Littleton Public Schools in 2015. I am really glad I made the switch to LPS because of this district's commitment to empowering teachers with organized and intentional professional development opportunities as well as the commitment to valuing the whole child, including his/her emotional health and self-efficacy. There's no better learner than one who feels confident and safe.
I really enjoy getting to meet new learners each year and discovering what makes each student tick. Establishing positive relationships is important to me, so getting to know kids' interests, fears, talents, and unique qualities is something I take the time to do at the beginning of each year. Learning about what motivates and inspires a student is a joy in itself, but also leads to wonderful learning opportunities throughout the school year.
Since I ask students to inform me about who they are, I will do the same.
I am a Colorado native, born right smack-dab in Denver in 1977, and I don't plan on living anywhere else. I am drawn to the outdoors, especially Colorado's breathtaking fourteeners (peaks in the Rocky Mountains whose summits reach higher than 14,000 feet). One of my 'Bucket List' items is to reach the top of every 14er before I die, and at 46 peaks of 54, I'd say I'm making headway. I also like to bike and camp. As for skiing and snowboarding - what some might think is a requirement for Colorado natives - don't ask; let's just say being flattened at five years old by a fast, flailing behemoth of another skier leaves emotional scars on a guy.
I am the youngest of four and most people in my family still live in Colorado, so we remain close, and family is very important in my life. If it isn't Sunday dinner at my mom's, we spend lots of quality time together celebrating holidays, birthdays, and other milestones.
One such milestone was when I graduated with my Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from CU Denver. (Of course higher education would be important to an educator.)
Another important moment was becoming an official family when I married my husband in 2011. We enjoy *almost* all of the same things, including the following: seeing every Oscar-contending film we can; reading books by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors like Jeffrey Eugenides; spending time with our dog, Jedi, an Aussie mix; and getting together with nerdy friends to play some of the more-than-360 board games we've amassed over the years.
I love games so much I strive to be on game show someday (which probably explains why I sometimes run my classroom like one!), and have tried out for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and The Amazing Race. No luck as of yet, but I'm not giving up; I would even eat bugs to get on a game show if necessary. Grubs? No problem!
I may not be afraid of eating bugs, but I am scared of some things. Getting struck by lightning on the top of a 14er, for instance. But my biggest fear by far - of all things, for whatever reason - is cats. I have frequent nightmares about them, I distrust them, and they seem to know it and enjoy tormenting me by chasing me, hopping up on me with their needly claws, and staring me down with their vertical pupils. My fear is as irrational as they come. Maybe one day I'll learn not to be so horrified by them.
When I get frightened or begin to doubt myself, I think about my favorite superhero, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She may be fictional, but her confidence, bravery, and desire to use her talents to do what is right to help others remind me that I can stand up and use my strengths to benefit others, too.
I consider the following to be among my greatest strengths and talents:
I am compassionate and reverent for all types of people, including the quirky, often misunderstood, and underdog types
I enjoy written language and have a way with words (graduated with a degree in Journalism and worked for an advertisement agency for ten years)
I think of fun and creative experiences for kids as a vehicle for engaging learning
I play a mean piano
If students and their families enjoy games, nature, literature, film, superheroes, underdogs, or lifelong learning, chances are high we're going to have a banner year together full of fun and personal and academic growth. If students and their families enjoy cats, on the other hand...well, I can't make any promises =)
